Description |
The S-300 PM was the upgraded standard production version and accepted for operational service around 1990, designated by the Russian S-300 PM (M for modified). The S-300 P family is the third generation of S-300 air defense missile system The S-300 PM is intended to defeat current and future targets in all conditions of their employment under intensive ECM and multiple threat environments such as: strategic, tactical and multirole aircraft, strategic cruise missiles, ballistic trajectory air-launched missiles, tactical and theatre ballistic missiles, antiradar missiles. The S-300 P missile system family includes thee S-300 PM, PMU, PM1, PMU1, PM2, PMU2. A battery S-300 PM was equipped with up to four 83P6 fire units, comprising in total twelve (4 x 1 + 2) 5P85S/5P85D (SU/DU export variant), each with four 5V55 rounds. The S-300 PM can also use the launcher vehicle 5P85D and the command and control vehicle 5P85S.

Missile support |
Four paired missiles container-launchers are mounted to the rear of the semi-trailer. In firing position, the missiles containers are placed at the vertical to the rear side of the trailer.
|
Missile |
New missiles were developed for the S-300PM system, the Fakel 48N6 and the 48N6E. Missile guidance was changed to the Track-Via-Missile (TVM) radar type using modified `Flap Lid' engagement radar for control. A new rocket motor was used to increase the effective missile engagement range to a more acceptable 150 km. The missile speed peaks at 2,100 metres/sec or cca Mach 6. The missiles can be fired at 3 second intervals, and Russian sources claim a single shot kill probability of 80% to 93% for aerial targets, 40% to 85% for cruise missiles and 50% to 77% for TBMs.
|
Truck tractor |
The basic version of the missile system S-300 PM uses the 5P85T semi-trailer launcher with the heavy truck 6x6 KRAZ-260.
|
Command and control vehicles |
A typical S-300PM battery comprises 30N6E1 engagement radar, a 76N6 low level early warning / acquisition radar and up to a maximum of eight 5P85S/5P85T. A PVO battalion then combines up to six batteries, using shared 64N6E acquisition radar, supported by a 54K6E command post. Both the launcher unit variants departed from earlier subtypes in that all launcher units qualify as "smart" and "dumb" can be independently addressed by the 30N6E1 battery radar via data links. The more compact electronics package saw the removal of the large cabin used with the S-300PS/PMU 5P85S/SU TEL. An new option for the S-300 PM is the new LEMZ 96L6 Cheese Board early warning and acquisition radar, a planar array design with electronic beam steering in elevation and mechanical steering in azimuth. It is intended as a replacement for the Tin Shield and Clam Shell. The 96L6/96L6E is available in semi-mobile towed versions, a semi-mobile mast mounted version using variants of the 40V6M/MD, and a fully mobile version on an 8x8 MZKT-7930 vehicle, based on the MAZ-543M chassis.
