SA-5 Gammon S-200 Angara Vega Dubna
SA-5 Gammon S-200 Angara Vega Dubna
Long range, medium-to-high altitude SAM Surface-to-Air Missile Russia
Description
The SA-5 Gammon (Russian name S-200 Angara/Vega) is a low- to high-altitude surface-to-air missile system designed to defend large areas from bomber attack or other strategic aircraft. Initial deployment of an S-200 trials unit using the original 5V21 missile took place from 1963 to 1964 on the outskirts of Tallinn in Estonia. The first operational regiments were deployed in 1966 with 18 sites and 342 launchers in service by the end of the year. By 1967, when the S-200 was officially accepted into service, the site total had risen to 22, by 1968 to 40, and by 1969 to 60.
Variants:
- SA-5 a (S-200A "Angara"): with the V-860/5V21 or V-860P/5V21A missile, introduced in 1967, range 160 km (88 mi), ceiling 20 km (66,000 ft)
- SA-5b (S-200V "Vega"): V-860PV/5V21P missile, introduced in 1970, range 250 km (155 mi), ceiling 29 km (95,000 ft)
- SA-5b (S-200 "Vega"): with the V-870 missile, range increased to 300 km (186 mi) and ceiling to 40 km (125,000ft) with the new, shorter missile and solid fuel motor
- SA-5b (S-200M "Vega-M"): with the V-880/5V28 or V-880N/5V28N² missile, range 300 km (186 mi), ceiling 29 km (95,000ft)
- SA-5b (S-200VE "Vega-E"): with the V-880E/5V28E missile, export version, high explosive warhead only, range 250 km (155 mi), ceiling 29 km (95,000ft)
- SA-5c (S-200D "Dubna"): with the 5V25V, V-880M/5V28M or V-880MN/5V28MN² missile, introduced in 1976, high explosive or nuclear warhead, range 400 km (248 mi), ceiling 40 km (125,000ft).
Technical Data
Missile launcher unit |
The missile of the SA-5 Gammon is mounted to a single ground station. The S-200 is normally transported from battalion storage areas on modified (8 x 8) trucks and loaded onto the launchers.

Missile |
The SA-5 Gammon missile is launched by 4 solid-fueled strap-on rocket boosters. The maximum range is between 150 and 300 km, depending on the model. The maximum target speed is around Mach 4. Effective altitude is 300 to 20,000 m for early models and up to 35,000 m for later models. The warhead is either 217 kg high explosive fragmentation triggered by radar proximity fuse or command signal, or a 25 kt nuclear warhead triggered by command signal only. Each missile weighs around 7018 kg at takeoff. The initial version, the S-200 (US designation SA-5a) fielded in 1963, used the 150-km range 5V21 command-guided missile with a conventional warhead. The second version, the S-200V Angara (US designation SA-5b) fielded in 1971, used the longer-range 250 km 5V28 missile. This was a dual-capable weapon using either a command detonated or proximity fused conventional 217 kg HE-fragmentation warhead or a command detonated 25 kT yield nuclear warhead with a semi-active radar terminal homing seeker. The only export version of the conventional warhead was designated S-200VE (Vega). The final version was the S-200D Angara (US designation SA-5c), with an IOC date of 1975 and which used the 5V28V missile with enhanced maneuverability, an improved radar guidance system using upgraded ECCM capabilities and a maximum range of 300 km. The conventional warhead only export version was designated S-200DE Vega. There is also a possibility of an anti-radar homing, passive seeker missile version having been developed in the 1970s for use against standoff jammers and early variants of AWACS type aircraft.

Command and Control radar |
The headquarters unit of an SA-5 S-200 regiment has a radar section with a single D-band (NATO designation 'Big Back') 500 km plus range early warning radar. Each missile battalion has, one P-35M (NATO designation 'Bar Lock-B') E/F-band 320 km range target search and acquisition radar with an integral D-band IFF system, one H-band 5N62 (NATO designation 'Square Pair') 270 km plus range missile guidance radar, six trainable semi-fixed single rail 5P72 launchers with supporting loader units and pre-launch preparation cabins and diesel-powered electricity generator stations. |
Combat use |
Each battalion of SA-5 Gammon consists of 6 single-rail missile launchers for the 10.72 m long missiles and fire control radar. It can be linked to other, longer-range radar systems. During its use in the Russian army, the SA-5 Gammon (S-200) was organized into Air Defense Rocket Brigades. These consisted of two or three regiments with two five S-200 battalions of six launchers each. These were arranged in circles around the battalion's 5N62 ('Square Pair') radar and two or three battalions of S-125s, each with four quadruple launchers to provide low altitude cover for both the installations being guarded and the S-200 battalions. In addition, each of the SAM battalions had a sub-unit of Automatic Anti-Aircraft (AAA) guns of either light (23 mm ZU-23) or medium (57 mm S-60) caliber. |
