S-60 57mm
S-60
57mm anti-aircraft gun - Russia
Description
The S-60 is a Russian-made 57mm anti-aircraft gun designed by the Central Design Bureau and introduced in 1950 as the replacement for the older 37-mm M1939 anti-aircraft gun. The S-60 is designed to provide defense against aircraft and helicopters, and can also be used against lightly armored ground vehicles in a ground support role. The S-60 can be used completely autonomously but when equipped with optical fire control, it also employs an off-carriage FLAP WHEEL fire control radar, mounted on a separate vehicle. The S-60 is no longer in service in the Russian army but is still in service with many armed forces in the world. The tactical anti-aircraft range is 4,000 meters with optical sights and 6,000 meters with radar guidance.
S-60 57mm anti-aircraft gun variants:
- Type 59: Chinese-made version of the Soviet-made S-60.
Technical Data
Armament |
The S-60 uses a single barrel of 57mm caliber. The original S-60 had a long thin barrel capped by a multi-perforated muzzle brake. The anti-aircraft S-60 can fire a full range of ammunition as the FRAG-T and APCT-T. According to some Russian sources, the S-60 can also fire ammunition HEI-T (High Explosive) and API-T (Armour Piercing). The ammunition is fed to the gun in four-round clips. A horizontal feed tray on the left side of the mounting holds one clip of four 57 mm rounds and a second clip can be placed on an upright stand that rotates with the mounting. The gun has an effective firing range of 4 km as a standalone weapon and 6 km with fire control. In real combat conditions, the S-60 can engage aerial targets with a range from 0.5 to 1.5 km and has a firing range of up to 3 km against land targets.

Design |
The 57mm cannon system is mounted on a four-wheel carriage. A large gun shield was affixed to both sides of the barrel to protect the crew charged with maintaining, arming, and manning the weapon system. The shield folded away during transport as did the horizontal ammunition feed tray. In the firing position, the wheels are raised off the ground and the carriage is supported on four screw jacks, one at the front and one at the rear of the carriage, and one on either side of the carriage on outriggers. The gun can be fired from its wheels in an emergency. Three seats are mounted to the rear of the carriage.
|
Mobility |
Most of the time, the S-60 is towed by a military truck as the 6x6 ZIL-151 or Ural-375D. |
Combat Equipment |
Fire-control equipment consists of a reflex sight for anti-aircraft use and a telescope sight for ground use. There are four modes of operation, manual with the handwheels operated by the crew, assisted with the handwheels operated by the crew assisted by a servo motor, automatic with remotely controlled by a director, and zero indicator with remotely controlled by radar. |
