Mastiff 1 PPV
6x6 Protected Patrol Vehicle - United Kingdom
Description
The Mastiff 1 is a wheeled armored vehicle produced by Force Protection Inc, which manufactures ballistic and mine-protected vehicles. The automotive are integrated by Spartan Motors. These specialty vehicles are protected against small arms, land mines and IEDs using a combination of design features and materials to protect both the crew and engine compartment against a wide range of attacks. In 2006 the British Army deployed the first Mastiff armored vehicles to enhance troop protection in Iraq. The British MoD announced in October 2007 plans for the acquisition of additional 140 vehicles, to be delivered from the US Manufacturer Force Protection Inc. Mastiff is based on FPI's Cougar armored vehicle, enhanced with all-round slat armor and passive protection added to the sides, augmenting its protection against the more lethal threats encountered in the Iraqi theater.
Mastiff PPV Variants:
- Mastiff 1 currently comprises 2 variants: Troops Carrier and Ambulance.
- Mastiff 2: The Mastiff 2 is an improved version with a crew of 2 + 8 soldiers.
Technical Data
Armament |
The Mastiff 1 can be armed with the latest weapon systems, including a 7.62 mm general-purpose machine gun, 12.7 mm heavy machine gun or 40 mm automatic grenade launcher.
|
Design and protection |
The Mastiff 1 uses a Monocoque type, V-shaped hull that extends to the engine bay and serves to direct the blast away from under the vehicle. The large armor plates will also give added side protection from RPGs (Rocket Propelled Grenades) or IED (Improvised Explosive Device) explosions. Mastiff is a heavily armored, 6x6 wheel-drive patrol vehicle that carries six troops, plus two crew. It is currently on its third variation. These wheeled patrol vehicles have a less intimidating profile than tracked vehicles and give commanders on the ground in Afghanistan more options to deal with the threats they are facing.
|
Mobility |
The Mastiff 1 is powered by a 330-hp Caterpillar C7 diesel engine. It can reach a top road speed of 95 km with a maximum cruising range of 900 km range. The vehicle is based on 6x6 wheel drive truck chassis. |
Accessories |
The dual air-conditioners help keep heavily dressed troops from overheating in the 100+ degree F temperatures of Iraq. The Mastiff 1 have BOWMAN radios and electronic countermeasures and is fitted with additional armor beyond the standard level to ensure they have the best possible protection. |
