Description
The RANGER is a high mobility protected wheeled vehicle produced as a private venture by Universal Engineering/ UK Limited and has taken exactly one year to develop and build. It is designed to protect soldiers against the deadly and ever growing threat of roadside bombs and mines, known in the military as Improvised Explosive Devices or IEDs. Development of the Ranger started in 2008 and the first prototype was completed in 2009. RANGER represents the next generation of mine resistant armour protected (MRAP) vehicles. However, unlike previous such equipments, RANGER achieves improved medium mobility, STANAG 4569 Level 4 protection as a minimum, has been designed from the crew outwards and offers a 6 tonne payload in the 6x6 and 8x8 variants. The Ranger was presented for the first time in June 2009 at the DVD event (Defence Vehicles Dynamics) in Millbrook, United Kingdom. The ever growing British casualty figures being caused by these lethal explosives is a major concern to military planners in Whitehall. RANGER, however, offers the best possible protection from the effects of these deadly bombs and has a range of armour solutions which may be tuned to defeat a particular threat or weapon. Ranger design philosophy has been survivability focused. The entire vehicle has been designed from the crew outwards and has utilized mobility as a key feature of the survivability system. Ranger comprise a truly modular system which facilitates rapid change of role, enhances supportability, maintainability and availability by utilizing common modules (power pack, axle/drive modules, survivability capsules etc, weapon mounting systems, mission systems) across an entire family of vehicles. All major modules can be changed at 1st line unit level.
Variants :
Variants 4x4, 6x6 and 8x8 chassis.

Technical data
Armament
The Ranger can be fitted with a remote controlled weapon station armed with weapons up to 30 mm in calibre. At the DVD 2009 event, the Ranger was equipped with an ISTEC 392 Gun Ring Systems armed with an ATK 30 mm M230LF Chain gun. A small turret can be mounted on the roof, just rear the of the commander position. This small turret can be armed with a 7.62 mm, 12.7 mm or 40 mm automatic grenade launcher. Four smoke grenades discharger are mounted to each side, front of the vehicle.
Protection
The Ranger is designed to strike a good balance between a very high level of ballistic and mine protection with good cross country capability. The Ranger is built around a high survivability V-shaped hardened armoured steel capsule developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems. The steel capsule has spall liners and floating floor and under this an armoured belly plate. Minimum level protection of the production Ranger vehicle is STANAG 4569 Level 4B for anti-tank mines. For Kinetic energy attack it is Level 4 and it provides protection against RPG-7 anti-tank rocket launcher. All the windows of the Ranger vehicle provide a protection against the fire of small arms and shell splinters of the battlefield. Side windows are also protected with bar armour. If the Ranger runs over a mine the damaged module can be removed and replaced by a new module very quickly. The sides of the Ranger can be also equipped with tuneable add-on armour. The tuneable add-on armour package is unlimited and includes Explosive Reactive Armour (ERA), Active Armour (AA, plate armour, and Ceramic armour.
Propulsion
The first prototype of the Ranger high protected patrol vehicle is motorised with MAN 540 Diesel engine mounted in the front of the vehicle, coupled to a ZF 12 speed automatic transmission which gives a high power-to-weight ratio of 28.4 hp/tonne with acceleration for zero to 50 km/h in seven seconds. The Ranger presented at the DVD was a 6x6 version, but the Ranger has been designed as a family of vehicles with a variety of chassis, 4x4 and 8x8.Steering is power assisted on front wheels and rear wheels can also be steered which provides a turning circle of 16 m.
Accessories
The Ranger can be fitted with cameras with images displayed at commanders and drivers as well as to the troops in the rear. The rear side of the Ranger is equipped with a large power operated ramp, which allows the troops to enter and leave quickly of the vehicle. There are also hatches above the commander and driver position as well as above the rear the compartment. An 8.16 tonne winch is mounted at the front of the Ranger chassis, which can be used for self-recovery operations or to recover other vehicles. An auxiliary power unit is fitted as standard and his allows all of the sub-systems such as air conditioning unit and communication systems to be run with the main engine switched off. The Ranger can be transported by a plane of the type C130CJ, C-17 or A400M.
