The BTR-D is an airborne tracked armoured vehicle personnel carrier which was designed and manufactured in Russia. The BTR-D was deployed for the first time during the Russian invasion of Afghanistan. The BTR-D is a variant of the BMD-1, with a longer chassis and one additional road wheel, the turret removed and with a raised hatch area. This is the standard armoured vehicle personnel carrier used by the Russian airborne troops (VDV). This is a multipurpose armoured carrier which can be airdropped. |
Variants: |
- BTR-DG: Cargo variant without bow machine guns, firing ports and periscopes. The troop compartment was modified to serve as a cargo compartment. |
- BMD-KShM: Command post version. This has a folding `Clothes Rail' antenna around the superstructure but the front firing ports with their 7.62 mm machine guns are faired over and there are no firing ports in the hull sides; the forward-firing 81 mm smoke grenade dischargers have also been removed. |
- BTR-D San: Field ambulance tracked armoured. The troop's compartment is converted to carry wounded personnel. |
- BTR-RD/Robot: Anti-tank missile launcher vehicle. Two launchers for AT-4/5 anti-tank missiles are mounted on the top of the hull. |
- BTR-ZD: A ZU-23-2 twin anti-aircraft cannon is mounted on the roof of the troop's compartment. |
- BREM-D: Armoured recovery version of BTR-D. A crane is mounted on the top of the troop's compartment. The vehicle is also equipped with a recovery winch, combination spade and dozer blade, generator, towing equipment, electric welding system, tools and ready-use spares. |
- BMD-1R Sinitsa: BTR-D signal vehicle fitted with R-161A2M radio set, one heavy telescopic antenna mast stowed along the left-hand side of the roof of the hull and one antenna mast on the rear right-hand side of the roof of the personnel compartment. |
- R-440-ODB Kristall-BDS: BTR-D converted into an airborne satellite communications vehicle with an R-440 system with a range of 15,000 km. The vehicle has a roof-mounted satellite dish AK-12 that is covered with a cage-like structure during transport. |
- 1V119 Reostat/1V118 Spektr: BTR-D artillery battalion fire direction vehicle, equipped with a turret including NNP-21 and V-7 observation devices, three R-173 and R-159 radio sets, PAB-2AM aiming circle, three antennae mounts, DSP-30 and DAK-2 rangefinders. Armament |
The standard version of the BTR-D is armed with two 7.62mm PKT machine guns, one mounted on each side at the front of the hull and one 7.62mm PKT or 12.7mm machine gun mounted on the roof of the vehicle. Some early production vehicles had a small one-man turret armed with a 7.62 mm PKT machine gun that could be aimed and fired from within the turret. Some vehicles have also been fitted with a 30 mm AG-17 automatic grenade launcher. Two smoke-grenade dischargers are mounted at the rear on each side of the hull.
Design and protection |
The BTR-D can carry 13 men including 10 infantrymen in the rear compartment. The drive position is at the centre front of the hull, the vehicle commander hatch is just behind. Two small hatches are mounted to each side at the front of the commander position. Two semi-circular hatches are mounted on the roof to the rear of the commander position. The BTR-D is based on all-welded aluminium construction. The glacis protection of the vehicle has been increased by the use of a dual-slanted angle in the upper plates of the armour at the front. There are two firing ports with day periscope on each side of the hull and one more at the rear of the troop's compartment.
Mobility |
The BTR-D is motorized with a 5D-20 V-6 liquid-cooled diesel developing 240 hp. The vehicle can run at a maximum road speed of 61 km/h with a maximum cruising range of 500 km. The independent suspension on either side consists of six small road wheels with the idler at the front and the drive sprocket at the rear. There are five track-return rollers. The independent suspension combines a hydraulic system for altering the ground clearance and maintaining track tension with pneumatic springs, enabling the ground clearance to be altered from 100 to 450 mm. |
Accessories |
The BTR-D is fully amphibious and is propelled in the water by two water jets at the rear of the hull. Before entering the water a trim vane, which is stowed on the glacis plate when not in use, is erected at the front of the hull. Standard equipment of the BTR-D includes an NBC protection system and night vision equipment. One infrared searchlight is mounted at the front of the driver position.
