Description

The Bastion APC is a 4×4 armored personnel carrier vehicle that was produced by French Company ACMAT, a subsidiary of ARQUUS formerly Renault Trucks Defense. The vehicle was unveiled in June 2010 during the defense exhibition in France, Eurosatory. The vehicle is now in service with many African countries in different configurations. It's a new generation of light-wheeled armored vehicle personnel carriers. The Bastion APC is a 4x4, high-mobility infantry and reconnaissance armored vehicle developed based on the rugged chassis of the VLRA 2 TDN-TDE 4x4 tactical vehicle series to provide a capable and reliable multirole platform. Bastion APC is economically built with common parts of VLRA 2, enabling easy maintenance and uncomplicated logistics. The mechanical and automotive components of Bastion APC carry the basic design of a standard VLRA TDN-TDE. The Bastion APC incorporates blast protection technology with the mobility of a light armored vehicle. It was developed to keep the warfighter safe and tackle evolving threats. The Bastion APC is multi-mission capable and is ideal for reconnaissance, forward command and control, patrol, security, escort, route clearance support, peacekeeping, EOD, and urban and close-quarters operations. The features of the Bastion APC Acmat combine excellent off-road mobility and performance with high-level protection. The Bastion APC is a multi-role armored vehicle that can be used for a full range of missions as reconnaissance, forward command and control, patrol, security, escort, route clearance support, peacekeeping, urban and close quarter’s operations. In October 2018, at AUSA 2018, the Association of United States Army defense exhibition, AM General announced a partnership with French Company ARQUUS to manufacture the Bastion APC in the United States for the US Foreign Military Sales channel. The vehicle is now in service with many African countries in different configurations. On April 4, 2019, Bastion APCs were shown by the Senegalese armed forces during a military parade marking Senegal's 59th anniversary of independence. On January 4, 2023, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced via his Twitter account that France will deliver Bastion 4x4 armored vehicles to Ukraine.

Technical Data

Armament
The Bastion APC ARQUUS Acmat can be fitted with various types of remote weapon stations and turrets incorporating 7.62mm or 12.7mm machine guns, 40 mm automatic grenade launcher can be adapted to the Bastion APC range of vehicles. The version presented at Eurosatory in June 2010 was also equipped with three smoke grenade dischargers mounted to each side at the rear of the hull.
Design and protection
The design of the Bastion APC ARQUUS is divided into three main parts, with the engine at the front, the crew in the middle, and the troop's compartment at the rear. The Bastion APC can carry ten soldiers in an internal volume of 8.5m³, including the driver and commander at the front and eight soldiers at the rear. The infantrymen enter and leave the BASTION APC via a double door without a central pillar in the rear of the hull, which opens outwards. Three bullet-proof windows are mounted to each side of the crew compartment, each with firing ports mounted in the lower part.  The high hardness armored steel hull provides all-around protection against infantry rifles and machine guns (ballistic protection Level 1 to Level 3, NATO STANAG 4569) and artillery shell splinters. The vehicle provides protection against anti-personnel and anti-tank mines and side explosives. The Bastion uses V-hull technology, the purpose of this design is to increase vehicle and crew survivability by deflecting an upward-directed blast from a landmine or Improvised Explosive Device away from the vehicle, while also presenting a sloped armor face. By presenting its armor at an angle, it increases the amount of material a ballistic projectile must pass through in order to penetrate the vehicle, and increases the chance of deflection. The anti-mine protection is Levels 2a / 2b NATO STANAG 4569.
Mobility
The Bastion APC ARQUUS uses a 4x4 chassis based on the rugged chassis of the light truck VLRA 2. The Bastion APC can be powered by an MD 5.0-litre Turbo Diesel Intercooler or Deutz engine that can give 215hp at 2,300 rpm, coupled to a 6-speed mechanical or 5-speed automatic transmission. The engine compartment is located at the front of the vehicle, leaving the remainder clear for the crew and passengers. The Bastion APC has a cruise speed of 110 km/h and a maximum range of 1,000 km. The Bastion APC can negotiate a side slope of 30% and a maximum slope of 65% and can ford a maximum water depth of 1m. It can climb a vertical obstacle of 0.5m maximum and cross a trench of 0.8m.
Accessories
The crew and passenger survivability features include blast-resistant seats. In option, the Bastion APC can be equipped with 24 v pre-equipment radio communication kit, front electric winch, and central tire inflation system. The Bastion APC is air transportable by C130, C160, and A400M transport aircraft and by CH47 helicopter.
