Description
The BM-30 Smerch 9A52 is a Russian-made heavy multiple rocket launcher. The BM-30 is designed and manufactured by the Russian Company Splav State Research and Production Association, Tula, Russia, which also manufactures the Uragan, Grad, and Prima rocket launchers. The BM-30 Smerch 9A52 was first seen by the West in 1983 and is entered in the Russian army in 1987. The BM-30 Smerch 9K58 is designed to counter tactical missile systems, army aviation at staging airstrips, as well as rocket, artillery and mortar battalions and batteries, command post, and manpower concentration areas. A Smerch unit is typically composed of six launchers and six transloaders. Now it is used by Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kuwait, and United Arab Emirates, Indian, and Chinese armed forces.
Variants:
- 9A52-2: Modernization of the basic version of BM-30 Smerch with automated laying and fire control system on the vehicle.
- 9A52-2T: This version uses the Czech truck chassis Tatra-816.
- 9A52-4 Tornado: new modernized version with new launcher unit with six tubes of 300mm caliber.
Technical Data
Armament |
The BM-30 Smerch 9K58 launcher vehicle is equipped with 12 launcher tubes. The BM-30 Smerch can fire the 9M55K 300 mm rocket. The 300 mm rocket tube arrangement is two separate banks of four with a connecting roof of the remaining four tubes overlying the inner tubes of the banks. The rocket used is of 300 mm caliber, fitted with a `self-contained powered-flight phase control system which provides an increase in fire precision by a factor of two and inaccuracy by a factor of three as compared to unguided rockets. The minimum range is 20,000 m and the maximum range is 70,000 m.

Design and protection |
The cabin truck of BM-30 is not protected. A launch cabin is mounted just behind the driver's position. The launch vehicle's cabin accommodates the launch preparation and firing equipment.

Mobility |
The BM-30 Smerch artillery system is available based on Russian MZKT MAZ-543 8x8 chassis or a Czech Republic Tatra chassis both wheeled. The MAZ-543 chassis is fitted with powered steering on the front two axles. BM-30 Smerch reaches a maximum road speed of 60 km/h. Vehicles manage 30° slopes and 1 m fords. Autonomy on roads is 850 km. |
Accessories |
The truck of the BM-30 9K58 Smerch is equipped with two circular feet of stabilization, mounted to each side of the chassis. These are positioned on either side between the rear and front two roadwheels. The BM-30 9K58 Smerch is also equipped with a central tire-pressure regulation system that allows the driver to adjust the tire pressure to suit the terrain being crossed from within the cab. |
