Description

The 2S35 Koalitsiya-SV is a new generation of Russian-made self-propelled tracked howitzer based on the 2S19 chassis fitted with a new turret. Some time ago, Russia unveiled a twin-barreled self-propelled howitzer under the name of 2S35, but the project was canceled. In March 2015, the first picture was released on the Internet showing the new 2S35 during rehearsal for the Victory Day military parade on May 9, 2015. Some Russian sources said that the 2S35 can fire fully autonomously without any crew in the turret. In March 2015, the Russian website announced the first delivery of the first batch of 12 2S35 152mm self-propelled howitzers. According to Russian military engineers, the new 2S35 can use high-explosive long-range precision-guided munitions with a maximum range of 70 km and a high level of accuracy. In May 2020, it was announced that Russia has received the first 2S35 152mm self-propelled howitzers.

2S35 Koalitsiya-SV variants:

- A new version of the 2S35 was unveiled in 2021, equipped with two blocks mounted at the front of the turret. These "blocks" may house Doppler radar systems. Doppler radars are essential for accurately determining the trajectory of a projectile, eliminating the need for a traditional sighting shot. Typically, in traditional artillery, an initial shot is fired at a target, but due to factors such as wind, humidity, and weather conditions, the initial shot deviates significantly from the target.

Technical Data

  • Armament

The 2S35 Koalitsiya-SV tracked self-propelled howitzer is armed with the new 2A88 cannon 152mm which is under development. During traveling, the cannon is held in position by a traveling lock mounted on the glacis plate. The 2S35 can fire a wide range of munitions, including standard and rocket-assisted HE-FRAG projectiles, cluster projectiles with anti-tank submunitions, jammer carrying projectiles. It has a maximum firing range of 30 km with standard ammunition and around 40 km with a rocket-assisted projectile. It has also a fully automated ammunition loading and handling system with 8 rounds per minute rate of fire. The S2S35 is able to fire a new generation of 9K25, the 152 mm Krasnopol laser-guided projectile which has a maximum range of 20 km. When the Krasnopol is in flight, four fixed fins unfold to the rear with four movable control surfaces unfolding to the front. It uses inertial guidance for the middle part of the trajectory with semi-active laser homing being used for the terminal phase when the target is illuminated by the tripod-mounted laser designator. To increase its self-protection, a remote weapon station armed with a 12.7mm Kord machine is mounted on the top of the turret. Three smoke grenade dischargers are mounted on either side at the front of the turret. The turret is also equipped with an automatic loading system. The Koalitsiya-SV is equipped with a remote firing control system.

  • Design and protection

The 2S35 Koalitsiya-SV layout is very similar to the 2S19 howitzer, with the driver compartment at the front, turret in the middle of the hull, and power pack at the rear. The crew consists of three soldiers, a driver, a commander, and a gunner. The 2S35`s crew is located in an isolated armored module. According to our analysis of the first pictures of the 2S35, three hatches are located at the front of the chassis, then we can suppose that there is no crew in the turret. The hull and turret are of all-welded steel armor construction which provides protection from small arms fire, shell splinters, and mines.

  • Mobility

The 2S35 Koalitsiya-SV uses components of the T-90 MBT chassis motorized with a turbocharged diesel engine developing 1,000 hp. The suspension is of the torsion bar type with either side having six roadwheels, an idler at the front, a drive sprocket at the rear, and five track-return rollers, with the upper part of the track being covered by a skirt. The howitzer can reach a top road speed of 60 km/h with a maximum cruising range of 500 km.

  • Combat Equipment

Standard equipment of the 2S35 Koalitsiya-SV includes an NBC/CBRN protection system, night vision, computerized fire control, and screens for each member of the crew to control firing operations. A rectangular box is mounted on each side of the main armament, which can be monitored able to provide combat mission information. Each member of the crew has screens that display data for sight systems and control all firing procedures.
