Description

The Khalifa GHY02 is a 6x6 122mm self-propelled howitzer developed, designed and manufactured by the Military Industry Corporation of Sudan. The Khalifa was unveiled for the first time at the International Defence Exhibition in United Arab Emirates, IDEX 2013. The Khalifa artillery system uses 6x6 truck chassis. Vehicle can be airlifted by most medium transport aircraft. The Khalifa is a simple mobile artillery vehicle primarily designed for fast intervention and quick response in all-terrain condition. The Khalifa truck mounted 122mm self-propelled howitzer perfectly combines mobility and fire power with the use of cross-country truck chassis and a large caliber howitzer. The Khalifa is operated by a crew of 5 soldiers, and has a combat weight of 20,500 kg. The system can be ready to fire between travelling and combat position within 90 seconds.

Armament

The Khalifa GHY02 is armed with Russian-made 122mm D-30 refurbished towed howitzer mounted on a turntable at the rear of 6x6 truck chassis. The howitzer retained the distinctive multi-baffle muzzle brake and recoil-recuperator mechanism mounted above the gun barrel on the original D-30. The howitzer barrel is electric-operated, with an elevation in the firing arc outside the vehicle cabin from -5° to +70°, or firing above cabin from +15° to +70°. The vehicle can fire at a maximum rate of 8 rounds/min, with a maximum range of 17 km. A total of 45 rounds are carried onboard the vehicle. When the system is deployed in the firing position a large spade is lowered at the rear to provide a more stable firing platform. One hydraulic jack are also lowered toe each side at the rear of the truck chassis in firing position.

Design and protection

The Khalifa GHY02 D-30 122mm is based on a modified Kamaz 43118 6x6 redesigned chassis that has a demonstrated high level of cross-country mobility especially in all-terrain conditions in Africa. A fully enclosed cab has been mounted at the front of the vehicle and has seats for the crew of five. The cab is of welded steel armour and provides protection against firing of small arms and shell splinters. Each side of the crew compartment is equipped with two forward opening doors, with a large bulletproof window in the upper part. On large storage box is mounted at the rear of the crew cabin to carry equipment and ammunitions for the D-30 howitzer. A single seat is mounted at the rear of the howitzer for the gunner.

Propulsion

The Khalifa GHY02 D-30 122mm uses a modified 6x6 truck chassis Kamaz 43118. The Kamaz 43118 is motorized with Kamaz-740 10-260 Diesel engine. The vehicle can run at a maximum speed of 90 km with a maximum road range of 450 km.

Accessories

Standard equipment of the Khalifa GHY02 includes individual sets of spare parts, tools and accessories for the D-30 howitzer. The vehicle is fitted with a fire control system.
