The M03 NORA K-I is a 155mm truck mounted artillery system designed and developed by the Serbian Defence Company YugoImport. This is the third generation of NORA series wheeled self-propelled howitzer. The latest technology in design and manufacture were applied in designing of the third generation of NORA, which resulted in multiple savings in time as well as in the increased accuracy. The weapon is modular, which provides for the delivery of a number of different options depending on the user’s choice. The third generation NORA incorporates a number of new technical solutions such as complete armor protection of all sides of the vehicle which is most notable on the outside, and which has changed general outside appearance of the system. This latest modernized version of NORA series howitzer decreased the number of crew members, and created conditions in which not a single crew member need to leave the cabin during normal weapon operation. The M03 NORA K-I can be ready to fire the first round in less than 60 sec and leave its firing position in the same time. Rapid positioning of fire position and automatic gun orientation to the main direction, as well as achieved precision in determination of own position, classify the third generation NORA among the best weapons in its category. The accomplished automatic reception and carrying out of fire control command (signal) include automatic transmission and undertaking of given firing elements, gun loading, gun orientation on elevation and traverse, and firing following the given command. Classical sighting devices and GRS units have been retained as back-up equipment for classical operational procedure. |
Armament |
The M03 NORA-B52 K-I 155mm howitzer is armed with a 155 mm/52 mm calibre ordnance with automatic loader mounted in an armoured turret. To provide a more stable firing platform, four hydraulic stabilisers are lowered to the ground by remote control, two either side of the chassis. These are positioned to the rear of the second and forth axles. Elevation is from -5 to +65°, while traverse is 30° left and right. Elevation and traverse are electro-hydraulic with manual controls provided as a backup. The M03 NORA K-I can carry a total of 36 rounds, including 12 ready to fire and 24 kept in a magazine located behind the front cabin. In order to increase the safety of the crew, additional armament consists of a turret with machine gun caliber 7.62 mm (option remotely controlled armament station cal. 7.62 mm or 12.7 mm), and smoke grenade launchers (optional). The breechblock with reinforced mechanical resistance is produced. Kinematics of the breechblock is also changed to increase its reliability. A new, contemporary mechanism for insertion, extraction and triggering of the primer is designed, and the number of primers in the magazine is increased. Reliability of operation of loader subassembly, namely projectile carrier and propellant charge feed is improved. Shortened cycle of automatic charge provides for increased rate of fire in all firing elevations, as well as the possibility of firing of several missiles with simultaneous drop at ranges up to 25 km. The M03 NORA-B52 K-I gun howitzer has high fire power thanks to its long range (achieved range of 42 km with ERFB/BB projectile; estimated range with ERFB RA/BB projectile which is under development is expected be up to 56 km).

Design |
The M03 NORA K-I 155mm howitzer is based on a Serbian-made wheeled truck chassis with armour cabin and crew compartment. The layout of the vehicle is very similar to a standard tactical truck with a crew cabin at the front and the combat compartment at the rear chassis (for commander, gunner and loader). The introduction of ballistic protection has increased the probability of survival of the weapon when exposed to fragmentation effect of ordnance and missiles. Apart from protection against fragmentation effect, the applied solution of ballistic protection also provides resistance against ambush or effects of small caliber arms, as well as certain resistance of vital parts of the weapon against antipersonnel and anti-vehicle mines and improvised explosive devices. Protection system includes ballistic protection of armored cabin, turret, ammunition container and fuel tanks STANAG 4569 level I (STANAG 4569 level II as well as anti-mine protection (STANAG 4569 2A and 2 B) optional), automatic fire and noise protection (optional).

Mobility |
The M03 NORA K-I 155mm howitzer uses a Serbian-made 8x8 tactical truck chassis. The vehicle can run at a maximum road speed of 90 km with a maximum cruising range of 800 km. The truck howitzer is able to negotiate gradient up to 50%, side slope to 20% and cross a water obstacle from 1.2 to 1.6 m deep maximum.

Accessories |
The M03 NORA K-I 155mm howitzer is equipped with an auxiliary power unit (APU) intended for power supply of the all subsystems: elevation and traverse mechanism, automatic loader, firing mechanism, front and rear trails increases autonomous engagement of the weapon. Standard equipment of the M03 NORA K-I electro-hydraulic laying of the weapon in traverse and elevation, automatic line of sight, electric and hydraulic extracting and retracting of front and rear trails, GPS navigation and orientation system and fire control system. A radar is mounted on top of the weapon system for measurement of muzzle velocity
