Description

The PTA is a unique modular assault bridge designed and manufactured by the French Company CNIM. It has been in service within the French Army since 2009, where it is also called SPRAT (Système de Pose Rapide de Travures - Rapid Bridge Instrallation System). The PTA operates with main battle tanks, such as the Leclerc, and armored assault units.

Its system has operational performances which are matchless in the world:

- Its modular bridging capacities (at the last moment, the length of the bridge can be adapted [14.3 or 26 m] according to the width of the gap)
- Its tactical launching system (fully automatic launching of a 26 m long bridge in less than 10 minutes; natural banks adaptability, day & night operations)
- Its high mobility on and off road (speed up to 70 km/h, all terrain maneuverability, slope up to 60 %, civilian roads) thanks to its wheeled chassis (10x10)
- The excellent protection of the crew against aggression on the battlefield, even during the operations of launching and retrieving of the bridge (protection against ballistic, IED and NBC threats)

Bridge

The PTA’s originality resides in the fact that the length of the bridge can be adjusted according to the width of the gap that has to be crossed. This modular assault bridge has two sections that can be deployed together or separately: it can either deploy two bridges of 14.3 m, or one bridge of 26 m. The 14.3 meters long bridge can support up to 120 tons. The 26 meters long bridge can support 80 tons (tracked vehicles) or 100 tons (wheeled vehicles). Currently, the PTA is the strongest assault bridge in the world.

Design and Protection

The PTA is equipped with a fully enclosed mine and ballistic protected cab which is fitted with an NBC and air conditioning system. The launching and retrieving operations can be performed under full protection by a crew of two: The driver and vehicle commander.

Mobility

The PTA is based on the 10 × 10 cross-country chassis which is fitted with power steering, independent suspension and a central tyre pressure regulation system that provides a high level of mobility. The PTA is motorized with a turbocharged diesel engine, developing 760 hp.

Accessories

Standard equipment of the PTA includes air conditioning and NBC protection system. The vehicle is also equipped with a central tyre pressure system. The tyre pressure can be adjusted from the driver's station to suit various terrain conditions.

Combat use

The PTA system is composed of two vehicles:
- One launcher, vehicle equipped with two 14 m long bridge sections, that can be launched either separately or assembled to cross respectively two gaps of 12 m each, or a 26 m wide gap;
- One bridge supplier (called PTS within the French Army) equipped with 2 additional bridge sections. the launcher vehicle can help itself: It can take the extra sections from the bridge supplier and deploy new bridges.
