CV9040 - Strf 9040 IFV

Infantry Fighting Vehicle Tracked Armored - Sweden

Description

The CV90 is a family of infantry fighting combat vehicles (IFV) that was developed by the Swedish Company Alvis Hägglunds, now a subsidiary of BAE Systems. There are two main versions, the CV9030 armed with a 30mm cannon and the CV9040 also named Strf 9040 in the Swedish army, armed with a 40 mm automatic cannon. Development of the CV90 started in 1984 and, following trials with an unarmed automotive test chassis, five prototype vehicles and turrets were built for extensive trials under a wide range of operational and environmental conditions. The Swedish Army placed its first contract for the CV9040 in March 1991, with the first production vehicle, a CV9040, handed over to the Swedish Army on November 1, 1993. The Strf 9040C is the most heavily armored version in Swedish Army service and in 2016 the Government awarded BAE Systems Hägglunds AB And BAE Systems Bofors AB, a contract to refurbish and upgrade 262 Strf 9040 for the Army. In January 2023, the Army Recognition editorial team reported that Sweden will provide Ukraine with the CV9040, one of the most modern and powerful tracked armored IFVs (Infantry Fighting Vehicles) in the world.

CV9040 main variants:

- Stridsfordon (Strf) 9040 (SB1A3): The original model carries eight soldiers and is equipped with a 40 mm Bofors autocannon. From November 1997, the gun was gyro-stabilized. Versions are referred to by the letters A, B, or C depending on upgrades. All from A onwards remain in service.
- Strf 9040: Original production version with no gun stabilization and Lyran mortar. Incremental improvements were made during production; all have been upgraded to Strf9040A standard.
- Strf 9040A: Strf 9040 upgraded with extensive chassis modifications and external gun stabilization on the turret front. It has more storage and better emergency exits, and the seats in the troop compartment were reduced to seven.
- Strf 9040B: 9040A updated with improvements to armament (new fire control software, electric firing pin, fully stabilized gun with internal stabilization and reserve sight with a video camera for the gunner), improved suspension for better accuracy and crew comfort while moving, new instrumentation and new seatbelts.
- Strf 9040B1: Strf9040B modified for international peacekeeping missions. It has a 3P ammunition programmer, climate control, and an anti-spall liner.
- Strf 9040C: Upgraded version for crew training and international operations. As per 9040B1 with additional all-around armor, laser filtering in all periscopes, and tropical grade air conditioning. Due to the bulk and weight of the modifications, only six soldiers can be carried.
- CV9040 AAV Luftvärnskanonvagn (lvkv) 9040: Anti-air vehicle, fitted with PS-95 radar from Thomson CSF Harfang (now Thales Group) and a high elevation 40 mm autocannon capable of using programmable ammunition. It is connected to the national air defense net LuLIS. Three have been upgraded to C-standard. There is also a demonstrator, designated Lvkv 90-TD, fitted with infrared video targeting and a fully stabilized gun for firing on the move.

Technical Data

Armament
The main armament of the CV9040 or Strf 9040 includes a 40 mm Bofors Defence 40/70B cannon with the ammunition being fed from underneath and the empty cartridge cases ejected out of the roof. The 40 mm gun can be aimed and fired by the commander or gunner selecting single shots at 60 rds/min, or automatic with 300 rds/min cyclic rate of fire. Maximum effective ranges are 2,000 m for ground targets and 4,000 m for air targets. The two-man power-operated turret is of all-welded steel construction, with the commander seated on the left and the gunner on the right, with both crew members having a single-piece hatch cover that opens to the rear. A 7.62mm coaxial machine gun M/39 is mounted to the left side of the main armament. A range of three smoke grenades discharger is mounted to each side of the turret. Fitted on the turret rear are two Bofors Lyran 71 mm mortar tubes which can fire illuminating bombs out to a maximum range of 1,600 m.
Design and protection
The hull of the CV90 (Strf 9040) is of all-welded steel armor construction with the driver seated front left, the power pack to his right, the turret in the center, an offset 200 mm to the left, and the troop compartment at the rear of the hull. The CV90 is protected all around against 14.5 mm armor-piercing rounds. The later version of the CV90 is said to be protected against 30mm APFSDS. In option, the vehicle can be fitted with add-on armor to increase the protection against Improvised explosive devices, explosively formed penetrators, and 30 mm caliber armor-piercing rounds. The CV9040 can be also fitted with cage armor, which provides protection against tandem-charge and shaped-charge warheads. The CV9040 can carry eight infantrymen. The soldiers enter and leave via a large door in the rear that opens to the right, which is provided with a single vision block with an associated firing port in the center.
Mobility
The power pack of the CV9040 (Strf 9040) consists of a Swedish-built Scania DI 14 V-8 diesel developing 550 hp, coupled to a Perkins Engines Company X-300-5N fully automatic transmission with torque converter and lock-up clutch and a total of four forward and two reverse gears. The CV9040 can run at a maximum road speed of 70 km with a maximum range of 320 km. Suspension is of the torsion bar type with either side having seven dual rubber-tired road wheels, a drive sprocket at the front, and an idler at the rear with no track-return rollers. A track tension adjusting system is fitted as standard on the CV90 allowing the driver to adjust both tracks at once without leaving his seat. Friction dampers are fitted at the first, second, sixth, and seventh road wheel stations.
Accessories
The gunner of the CV9040 has a SaabTech Vetronics Universal Tank and Anti-Aircraft System (UTAAS) sight with an armored shutter. The CV90 version has both day and night channels and a laser range finder. The thermal imager is provided by Kollsman together with the fire-control computer. The CV90 is fitted with a nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC) filtration system accompanied by a chemical detector and radiation detector systems. The CV9040 also uses heat-absorbing filters to provide temporary protection against thermal imaging (TIS), image intensifiers, and infrared cameras (IR). The CV 90 was designed to produce a very low and very compact structure to minimize radar and IR signatures.
