Amphibious IFV Infantry Fighting Vehicle on tracked armored China
Description
The ZBD-05 also called VN-18 for the export version is an amphibious Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) based on tracked armored using the chassis of the ZBD2000 family of tracked armored. The ZBD-05 uses the same chassis as the ZTD-05. The ZBD-05 has a crew of three, with the driver seated at front and the commander and gunner situated inside the 30mm cannon turret.

Armament |
The ZBD-05 or VN-18 is equipped with a two man turret, armed with a 30 mm cannon, one single missile rail launcher is mounted to each side of the turret for the wire-guided Hong Jian-73C anti-tank guided missiles tat can fire to a range from 4 to 5 km. A 7.62 mm coaxial machine gun is mounted to the left side of the main armament. A 12.7mm machine gun can be mounted on the roof of the turret. Two lines of two smoke-grenades discharger are mounted to each side of the turret.

Design and protection |
The layout of the ZBD-05 or VN-18 consists of three main parts with the powerpack at the front, turret in the centre of the hull and troop's compartment at the rear. It has a crew of three including driver, commander and gunner and can accommodate up to ten fully equipped soldiers. The driver is seated on the left side at the front of the hull with the engine on its right. Commander and gunner are positioned inside in the turret. The troops can enter and leave the vehicle via a single door mounted at the rear of the hull that opens to the right. The hull and the turret of the ZTD-05 are of all-welded steel armour construction, which give protection against fire of small arms and shell splinters.

Mobility |
The ZBD-05 or VN-18 is propelled by a strong-powered engine and can navigate at a high speed in water. The powerpack is mounted to the front of the vehicle. The vehicle can run at a maximum road speed of 65 km/h and 45km/h in the water. It has a maximum cruising range of 500 km and can negotiate a gradient of 60 % and side slope of 30%. It can cross a vertical obstacle of 0.7 m and trench of 2 m. The ZTD-05 features a large flat, boat-like hull, with six double road wheels and three return rollers. The upper part of the suspension is can be protected with armor plates. |
Accessories |
The ZBD-05 or VN-18 is fully amphibious, in the water the vehicle is propelled by two large water jets mounted to the rear side of the hull. According to Chinese sources standard equipment includes satellite navigation systems, night vision, NRBC (nuclear, Radiological, Biological and Chemical) protection system, fire control computer and laser range finder, all of these devices so that vehicles equipped with the sort of "ultra-horizon" environment daytime / night-time amphibious capability. |
