VBCI Mk 2 8x8 IFV Nexter Systems
Wheeled Armoured Infantry Fighting Vehicle France
Description
The VBCI 2 is an improved version of the standard VBCI designed and manufactured by the French Defense Company Nexter Systems mainly for the export market. The VBCI 2 was introduced at DSEI 2015, the International Defense Exhibition in London, UK. The VBCI 2 is presented at DSEI 2015 in its Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) version fitted with the latest development step of the 40mm CTA turret. The new version of the VBCI was developed and designed based on combat experience of French army in Mali. The main features of the VBCI is new level of protection, fire power and mobility. The VBCI 2 has been tested in Qatar fitted with the CTA40 40mm cannon turret in August 2016. In December 2017, Qatar has signed a letter of intent to purchase 490 French-made VBCI, that could be the improved version of the vehicle.
VBCI 2 variants:
The VBCI 2 can be configured as armored personnel carrier, command post vehicle, field ambulance and armored recovery vehicle.
Technical Data
Armament |
The first version of VBCI 2 Nexter Systems showed at DSEI 2015 and Eurosatory 2016 international defense exhibition was fitted with the two-man turret CTA40 armed with one 40mm automatic cannon with thermal sleeve and Ammunition Handling System (AHS) able to automatically manage the loading of ammunition in the gun. The turret is equipped with CTAS controller to control the the cannon and the AHS. It also incorporates the control of the weapon azimuth and elevation along with the ballistic calculation, coincidence control and the programming of the Airburst rounds (GPR-AB-T and A3B). The 40mm cannon is bale to fire different types of ammunition including APFSDS-T (Armour Piercing Fin Stabilised Discarding Sabot - Tracer), TP-T (Target Practice - Tracer), TPRR-T (Target Practice Reduced Range-Tracer), GPR-PD-T (General Purpose Round Point Detonating - Tracer), GPR-AB-T (General Purpose Round Point - Airburst - Tracer) and A3B-T (Anti-Aerial Airburst-Tracer). Second armament of the CTA4 turret includes one remotely operated weapon station mounted on the right side of roof turret which can be armed with a 7.62mm or a 12.7mm machine gun. Two launchers for anti-tank guided missile is mounted on each side of the turret. There is also two smoke grenade dischargers at the front of the turret, on the right and left side of the main armament. The VBCI 2 can be fitted with other turret or weapon stations according to the customer requirements.

Design and protection |
The layout of the VBCI 2 is very similar to the original VBCI with the driver at the front left side of the hull with the powerpack on its right, the turret is mounted in the middle of the roof hull and the troops compartment is at the rear. The hull is more longer and higher than the previous version of the VBCI offering more internal space. The VBCI 2 has a crew of three including driver, commander and gunner and can carry six infantrymen. Troops enter and leave the vehicle via a large power-operated ramp in the hull rear that opens downwards and which is also provided with an emergency door in the left side. The troops compartment is equipped with individual anti-mine blast seats, three on each side of the hull facing inside. The hull and the turret of the VBCI 2 are made of all-welded aluminium offering protection against firing of small arms and artillery shell splinters. The hull has additional layer of modular passive armour and internal spall liners. The VBCI 2 can be fitted with additional steel armour or titanium armour plates to increase ballistic protection. The VBCI 2 is fully qualified for protection Level 4A/4B of the AEP55 against Mines and Improvised Explosives Devices (IED’s). It has already demonstrated that it can even reach a higher level. Indeed, it has been tested in ”overmatch” conditions resisting to a Level 4 + 20% blast. For ballistic threats, the standard level 4 is proposed, level 5 and protection against 30mm APFDS rounds are offered as options.

Mobility |
The VBCI 2 is motorized with a Volvo D13 turbocharged diesel engine developing 600 hp. It uses an 8x8 suspension and powered steering on the front four wheels which has been improved to cope the increase of the weight which is now 32,000 kg while the previous version of the VBCI has a combat weight of 28,000 kg. It can run at a maximum speed of 100 km/h with a maximum cruising range of 750 km. |
Accessories |
Standard equipment of VBCI 2 included a central tire inflation system, run flat device, hydro-pneumatic suspension, air conditioning and NBC protection system. The engine and crew compartments are fitted with a fire detection and suppression system as standard. It can also be equipped with a battle management system and battlefield IFF. The VBCI 2 is fitted with external vision cameras with displays for commander and gunner. There is another display in the troop compartment for the infantrymen. The CTA 40 turret is fitted with the GCE (Gun Control Equipment) that provides full azimuth and elevation stabilization when firing on the move. The GCE includes the elevation and azimuth drive motors, encoders, gyroscopes, accelerometers and electronic control unit. The driver position is equipped with night vision equipment. |
