Description
The ZTD-05, also named ZLT-05 VN-16 in the export version, is an amphibious light tank designed and manufactured in China by NORINCO, especially for naval infantry units. The ZTD-05 is armed with a 105 mm gun. The ZTD-05 belongs to the series of amphibious vehicles developed by China. It is the fastest and most advanced medium-sized AAV. The ZTD-05 was designed for China by the Russian Tula KBP bureau, using the fighting compartment of the Russian BMP-3 armored infantry fighting vehicle as to starting point. The Kurgan machine-building plant was involved in the development of the rest of the vehicle, as well as the launch of its mass production. in September, Thailand announced the acquisition of three VN16 amphibious light tanks for its Marine Forces.

The ZTD-05/ZLT-05 or VN-16 is armed with a fully-stabilized 105mm rifled gun, similar to that found on the ZTS63A amphibious tank. The gun can fire the armor-piercing fin-stabilized discarding sabot (APFSDS), high explosive (HE), and high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT) rounds, and the Chinese indigenous 105mm gun-fired laser beam riding guidance anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) derived from the Russian 9M117 Bastion technology. The missile offers the vehicle the capability to fire at targets onshore while the vehicle is swimming at sea, where conventional ammunitions have poor accuracy due to the effect of the sea wave. Secondary weapons include a 7.62mm coaxial machine gun, and two sets of four smoke grenade launchers mounted on the side of the turret.

| Design and protection |

The hull and the turret of the ZTD-05/ZLT-05 or VN-16 are of all-welded steel armor construction, which gives protection against the firing of small arms and artillery shell splinters. The rear part of the turret is also fitted with a storage rack to provide additional protection against HEAT rounds. The ZTD-05 has a crew of four: driver, commander, gunner, and loader.

| The ZTD-05/ZLT-05 or VN-16 is propelled by a strong-powered engine and can navigate at a high speed in water up to 45 km/h. The powerpack is mounted to the front of the vehicle. The ZTD-05 features a large flat, boat-like hull, with six double road wheels and three return rollers. The upper part of the suspension is protected with armor plates. The vehicle can run at a maximum road speed of 65 km/h with a maximum cruising range of 500 km. |

| The ZTD-05/ZLT-05 or VN-16 has a retractable spurnwater in front of the body, which can offset the resistance of water and accelerate the movement in the water. The ZTD-05 uses a planning hull propelled by two large water jets to achieve a high speed of traveling in the water over a long distance, thus reducing the threats of enemy mines and shore defenses faced by the amphibious assault ships. The ZTD-05 is equipped with a computerized fire-control system (FCS), which includes a fire-control computer, light spot commander sight with laser rangefinder input, and light spot gunner sight with passive night vision. For day/night, all-weather amphibious assault operations, the vehicle is also equipped with a GPS navigation and imaged intensifier night vision or thermal imaging system. |
