Description
The MMSR is mobile multibeam search radar designed and manufactured by Polish Defense Company Pitradwar. The MMSR is self-contained 3D radar intended for target acquisition purposes in medium and short range air defence systems. The MMSR features comparatively high average transmitted power to provide sufficient coverage on small-RCS (Radar Cross-Section) targets and high ECCM (Electronic Counter-CounterMeasures) performance. The MMSR is used with the Polish-made Kobra short-range air defence system and the Poprad anti-aircraft mobile missile launcher to detect and tracks targets with the 3D radar.

Radar
The MMSR is fitted with a 3D radar station mounted at the rear of the Zubr 4x4 light armoured vehicle. The antenna is elevated for operation to ca. 3.5 m above the ground by means of a hydraulic drive, and folded down for cruising. Four hydraulically operated jacks are used for levelling the vehicle during radar operation. The 3D radar can detect a target at a maximum distance of 20 km and a maximum altitude of 40 km.
The 3D operation of the MMSR is based on the multiple stacked beam coverage technique, taking the advantage of searching a wide elevation sector at a time, thus making available the required high data renewal rate. The radar operates in S-band, employing a TWT transmitter of low peak power (10 kW), but high enough of average power. Linear frequency modulated (LFM) pulses are transmitted, then compressed on reception in the fully coherent transmit/receive system. The high-speed PLL frequency synthesizer provides flexible frequency agility, while maintaining high spectral quality which is a necessary condition for effective Doppler filtering of strong ground clutter.
The antenna unit incorporates primary radar antenna, IFF antenna (back to back) and IFF transceiver. The radar antenna produces a single cosec2 transmit beam and 5 receiving beams, covering an elevation sector nearly 55° wide. Signals of the five receiving beams are processed in a 4-channel receiving system; the two topmost beams are switched over from pulse to pulse and handled by a single receiving channel.
Design and protection
The MMSR is based on a Polish-made 4x4 cross-country vehicle chassis Zubr, to carry the radar station. The engine is at the front, the crew compartment in the middle and the cargo carrier area at the rear. The MMSR has a crew of two including commander and driver/operator. The radar operator's station is placed in the driver's cabin, consisting of a portable computer (notebook) and additional control panels. The operator can watch target tracks and BITE alarms and control radar operation on his display. If the need arises, he can also access the radar equipment set-up to check and adjust some parameters. Additional control panels are placed in the driver's cabin, enabling to control radar antenna deployment and operate the communication equipment. The forward part of the crew cab is fitted with a two-piece bulletproof windshield. There is one single door on each side of the vehicle. The Zubr provides a protection according to STANAG 4569 Level 4 for ballistic protection (7.62mm armour piercing rounds) and level 3a/3b protection against anti-personnel mines (8 kg explosive under any wheel or track location). The V-shaped hull deflects the blast impact of the landmines and IEDs away from the vehicle.
Mobility
The radar station of the MMSR is mounted on 4x4 light armoured vehicle Zubr. The MMSR Zubr is motorized with a N60 ENT C Iveco Tector 6 cylinder common rail direct injection diesel engine coupled to a manual or automatic gear box with six forward and one reverse speed. The engine develops a power of 202kW at 2,500rpm and a maximum torque of 930Nm at 1,250rpm. The MMSR vehicle can run at a maximum speed of 100 km/h with a maximum cruising range of 600 km.
Accessories
The MMSR is equipped with a land navigation system combining dead recon navigation, based on a high precision gyro, and GPS data, so the radar position is constantly updated and north alignment is immediate upon arrival at a new site. The power generator is installed on a two-wheeled trailer that is towed by the vehicle
Combat use
The modern digital signal processing system is based on powerful DSP circuits and performs most of its functions in a programmed manner, enabling to implement advanced processing algorithms and flexibly adapt it for particular needs. Multiple algorithms have been employed to detect hovering helicopters. The whole receiving system, beginning with the antenna row-based LNAs, is subject to automatic testing and calibration governed by the signal processing unit.
The radar uses state-of-the-art computer hardware, and sophisticated algorithms for automatic tracking of maneuvering air targets. Targets are detected automatically, their tracks initiated then interrogated whether friendly or hostile, and the proper labels are attached to the tracks. Radar data are automatically transmitted by radio to remote users operating within the radio communication range. Additionally, data recording capability is provided, enabling to register the detected plots and tracks over a period of several hours of radar operation, then play back interesting events.
The signal processing unit communicates with the operator's notebook, so the operator can view the target tracks and the equipment status, as well as change some set-up parameters, if necessary. The radar operates at a nominal antenna rate of 30 rpm, providing coverage as shown below. It can as well be operated at a slower or faster scan rate within a range up to 60 rpm, which enables to flexibly match the radar performance to the need.
