Description
The M1151A1 HMMWV (Humvee) is an improved version of de M1151 Expanded Capacity Armament Carrier developed and designed by the American Defense Company AM General. The M1151 is fitted with an heavier chassis and improved engine of the M1113 Humvee variant. The M1151 can be fitted with a standard armour package but was designed to accept the various armor packages developed to bring it to a similar level of protection to that of an Up-Armored HMMWV.

Armament
The M1151/M1151A1 is fitted with a ring mounted with a 360-degree arc of fire. The weapon station is protected with armour plates on 360°. It can be armed with Mk 19 Mod 3 automatic grenade launcher, M2, caliber, .50 machine gun, M60 and M240 7.62mm machine guns, and M249 5.56mm Squad Assault Weapon (SAW).
Design and protection
The layout of the M1151/M1151A1 is similar to the standard version of Humvee with engine at the front, crew compartment in the centre with four seats and cargo area at the rear. The M1151 is equipped with a standard armour package developed for the HMMWVs family, but the M1151A1 can be equipped with an adaptable armour packages. The Integrated Armor Protection (IAP) package of the M1151A1 includes underbody armor, rocker armor, lower windscreen deflector armor and energy absorbing seats. M1151A1 HMMWVs could be fitted with a default A-Kit armor package, with the option of addition B-Kit packages offering added protection. The B-Kit for armament carrier HMMWV, known as the B1 kit, includes perimeter armor, overhead armor, and rear ballistic bulkhead, bringing the vehicle up to a similar level of protection as the M1114. Frag Kits could also be installed.
Mobility
The M1151A1 is motorized with a General Engine Product (GEP) V8, 6.5l Turbocharged Diesel engine developing 190 hp. at 3,400 rpm. The M1151A1 can run at a maximum speed of 113 km/hr. with a maximum cruising range of 402 km. Fully-loaded M1151/M1151A1 could climb road grades as steep as 40% and traverse a side slope of up to 30 %; The vehicles could ford hard bottom water crossings up to 0.76m without a deep water fording kit and 1.52m with the kit. For higher payload capacity, the M1151 is equipped with a reinforced frame, cross members, lifting shackles, heavy-duty variable rate rear springs, shock absorbers, reinforced control arms, heavy-duty tires and rims, and a transfer case and differential with a modified gear ratio.
Accessories
Standard equipment of the M1151/M1151A1 includes run-flat system and Automatic Fire Extinguishing System. The front of the vehicle is equipped with a self-recovery winch.
