At Modern Day Marine 2012 exhibition, Sept. 25-27, 2012, in Quantico (United States), the American Company Oshkosh Defense has unveiled its new Special Purpose All-Terrain Vehicle (S-ATV) designed for unconventional and reconnaissance missions. Whether requiring extreme off-road mobility, air transportability or rapid adaptability, the Oshkosh Defense® Special Purpose All-Terrain Vehicle (S-ATV) fulfills the greater demands of Reconnaissance and unconventional missions. The S-ATV was built with direct input from Warfighters to provide the advanced performance needed for Special Reconnaissance, Counterinsurgency Operations, Long Range Surveillance, Site Seizure and Direct Combat. Oshkosh has revolutionized the S-ATV’s performance capacity and mission adaptability, combining innovative engineering with a solid understanding of the challenges forces face when fulfilling special missions. Its world-class suspension system has been proven to maximize mobility over the most rugged off-road terrain. Oshkosh has responded to the US Special Operations Command’s Ground Mobility Vehicle (GMV) 1.1 project with a variant of the S-ATV. The company is one of a number known to have responded to the GMV 1.1 requirement, which includes plans to acquire up to 1,300 vehicles for special operations missions with requirements for air transportability, weapons capabilities and high mobility. |

Design and protection |
The layout of the Oshkosh S-ATV is very similar to a 4x4 light tactical vehicle with the engine at the front, the crew compartment in the middle and a cargo area at the rear. The S-ATV had been designed to be easily reconfigurable and could accommodate two to seven soldiers, depending on the particular mission requirements. The S-ATV is ready mounts for ballistic and blast protection upgrades. A large cargo area is available at the rear side of the vehicle which can be used to carry water, fuel and ammunition boxes. The vehicle has a maximum payload capacity of 3,629 kg. Straps are available on the engine compartment bonnet for fixing equipment or ammunitions boxes. Two doors are mounted to each side of the crew compartment and three large windows are fitted to the front.
Mobility |
The Oshkosh S-ATV is motorized with a Turbocharged diesel engine with a maximum power from 225 to 300 hp. The vehicle is fitted with the TAK-4i intelligent independent-suspension system, developed from the Oshkosh experience with the M-ATV, provided significantly faster speeds when operating off-road. The S-ATV can reach a maximum road speed of 120 km/h with a maximum cruising range of 500 km.
Accessories |
The Oshkosh S-ATV’s whole systems engineering approach delivers the utmost in operational readiness. It features plug and play C4I capacity, integrated ready mounts for a multitude of armaments and ballistic and blast protection upgrades – all in one modular, rapidly reconfigurable and extremely capable platform. Its lightweight configuration was specifically designed to allow both external and internal helicopter transportability. Standard equipment of the S-ATV Oshkosh includes central tire inflation system and cold weather kit to permit operation to -45°C.
