Description
The FN SCAR-L (L for Light) is an assault rifle chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO caliber designed and manufactured by the Belgian firearms manufacturer FN Herstal. Assault Rifle 5.56mm FN SCAR-L variants:
- FN SCAR-L STD: Standard with 368 mm (14.5") barrel
- FN SCAR-L CQC: Close Quarter Combat with 254 mm (10") barrel
Technical Data
Design |
The FN SCAR-L used the common design of the FN SCAR family using massively polymer and aluminum components. As for the other members of the SCAR family, it features free-floating cold hammer-forged barrels with a chrome-lined bore. The FN SCAR-L is fitted with a gas regulator with two positions. The first position is for normal operation, while the second position ensures there is no increase in the cyclic rate of fire when using a sound suppressor. The FN SCAR-L assault rifle features an extended top MIL-STD 1913 Picatinny rail integrated to the monolithic aluminum receiver. Additional Picatinny rails are mounted on each side at the front of the weapon as well as under the barrel. The FN SCAR-L is fitted with an ambidextrous 3-position safety selector easily manipulated with the thumb of the firing hand. With the safety selector in the “S” position, the rifle is in the “on safe” position. With the safety selector in the “1” position, the rifle is ready to fire one shot. In the “A” position, the SCAR-L can fire in fully automatic mode.

Ammunition and Magazine |
The SCAR-L is designed to operate with NATO 5.56x45mm or .223 Rem caliber ammunition. It has a standard M16-type magazine with a capacity of 30 cartridges. The bolt/catch release locks the moving parts to the rearmost, open position after the last cartridge of the magazine has been fired. To release the moving parts when no magazine is in the rifle and the bolt/catch release is locked rearward, press inward on the bolt/catch release, or pull the charging handle to the rear to disengage the bolt/catch release and then release the charging handle.

Key Features |
The assault rifle 5.56mm FN SCAR-L is fitted with a foldable buttstock, which provides a more compact weapon package in helicopter or aircraft and vehicle deployments. When the buttstock is folded on the right side of the weapon, it is still possible to shoot and operate. The standard FN SCAR buttstock module is adjustable for length of pull (LOP) and cheek rest height to allow the stock to be adjusted to fit the gear of the operator. The buttstock is adjustable in length with six positions, numbered from 1 to 6. Each adjustment is equal to .50” for a total of 2.50" of LOP adjustment. The cheek rest is adjustable with 2 positions. Additional buttstock configurations are available on request. The FN SCAR-L rifle includes rear and front iron sights that are fully adjustable and foldable. A full range of accessories can be mounted on the top receiver (scopes) and side and lower Picatinny rails, (red dot sight, flashlight, bipod, vertical grip). As for the 7.62x51mm version of the FN SCAR assault rifle (FN SCAR®-H), the FN SCAR-L can be equipped with the FN40GL 40mm grenade launcher. The FN40GL attaches quickly and easily to FN SCAR rifles on the bottom rail of either FN SCAR rifle with a trigger adapter and dual locking clamp levers on the launcher. Both triggers can be pulled without changing hand positions. Firing all types of 40x46mm NATO standard low-velocity grenades with an effective range of approx. 350 meters, the FN40GL® can also be configured as a stand-alone launcher using a specific buttstock assembly. Completely ambidextrous, the FN40GL® uses an aluminum receiver mated to an aluminum barrel for durability and lightweight. The barrel pivots left or right for ease of loading. The grenade retention makes reloading possible in any position. The grenade case is automatically ejected. The weapon can also accept the FN® FCU Mk3 fire control unit that greatly increases first-round hit probability when firing 40mm grenades. |
