Description
The SV-98M is an improved variant of the Russian-made SV-98 bolt-action sniper rifle developed and designed developed in the early 2000s by Vladimir Stronskiy. The SV-98M was presented for the first time to the public in the new demonstration center of Kalashnikov Group during the International Military Technical Forum which was held in Russia in September 2016. The SV-98M sniper rifle is designed to engage various targets at a range up to 1,000 m. According Kalalshnokov representative, a few number of SV-98M has ordered by Russian army for operational test and evaluation.

Design
The SV-98M is based on lightweight aluminum skeleton type stock with a Picatinny rail mounted on the top of the receiver which can be fitted with optical scopes. This is a bolt-action sniper manually reloaded with 10 rounds magazine. The rifle safety catch locks the trigger, inert the sear and prevents the rotary bolt from turning (unlocking). The SV-98M is fitted with an adjustable length stock. The stock is comfortable for shooting both from the left and right shoulders. There is a bipod in the forearm and a leg in the buttstock; adjustment of each leg is independent. In travel position the bipod is folded into the forearm, and the rear leg – into the buttstock, and, thus, do not enlarge overall dimensions of the weapon. The SV-98M has a combat weight of 7.8 kg and a maximum length of 1,200 mm.

The SV-98M is fitted with an adjustable length stock.
Ammunition
The SV-98M is chambered for the 7N1 or 7N14 7.62x54R mm sniper cartridges and it has a magazine capacity of 10 rounds. The 7.62×54mmR is mainly used in sniper rifles like the Dragunov sniper rifle and machine guns like the PKM. To increase accuracy for the Dragunov SVD sniper rifle, the Soviets developed the 7N1 variant of the cartridge in 1966. The 7N1 was replaced in 1999 by the 7N14 special load developed for the SVD. The 7N14 round is loaded with a 9.8 g (151.2 gr) projectile containing a sharp hardened steel penetrator to improve penetration which is fired with an average muzzle velocity of 830 m/s (2,723 ft/s), for a muzzle energy of 2,489 ft·lbf. To reduce sound blast, blowback and flash, the SV-98M can be supplied with a tactical silencer.

Accessories
At Army-2016, the SV-98M was fitted with a 1P69 Hyperon optical scope mounted on the guide plate-type "Picatinny" at the top of the receiver. This sight provides automatic administration of aiming angles in determining the distance to the target, or if you install this distance (this is a special rotating ring). In addition, the design allows you to search 1P69, observation and aiming shots without changing the angle of sight at any magnification from 3 to 10x.
