Description

The Arleigh Burke class is a family of multi-mission guided-missile destroyers operated by the U.S. Navy and designed to conduct integrated air and missile defense, anti-air warfare, ballistic missile defense, anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare and long-range land-attack missions. The destroyers can operate independently or as part of Carrier Strike Groups, Expeditionary Strike Groups and Surface Action Groups, providing escort, forward presence, maritime security and power-projection capabilities in both littoral waters and open-ocean environments.

The Arleigh Burke class has evolved through four principal configurations: Flight I, Flight II, Flight IIA and Flight III. Flight I covers DDG 51 through DDG 71, while Flight II includes DDG 72 through DDG 78. Flight IIA, beginning with DDG 79, introduced important improvements including Cooperative Engagement Capability, dual helicopter hangars supporting two MH-60R helicopters, and enhanced air and missile defense, land-attack and anti-submarine warfare capabilities.

Flight III represents the latest and most capable air and missile defense configuration of the Arleigh Burke class. Introduced with DDG 125 and incorporated on DDG 126, DDG 128 and follow-on ships, Flight III combines the Aegis Weapon System Baseline 10 with the AN/SPY-6(V)1 Air and Missile Defense Radar. The configuration also incorporates electrical-power and cooling upgrades required to support the more capable radar and combat systems.

The AN/SPY-6(V)1 radar is the central capability improvement of Flight III and enables the destroyer to perform anti-air warfare and ballistic missile defense simultaneously. Integrated with Aegis Baseline 10, the radar and combat system improve the ship's ability to detect, track, and support engagements against complex air and missile threats, strengthening the protection of U.S. Navy carrier strike groups and other naval formations during high-intensity operations.

Flight III retains the Arleigh Burke class's multi-mission combat capability and 96-cell Mk 41 Vertical Launching System, providing substantial missile capacity for defensive and offensive missions. The destroyer can support air and missile defense, long-range strike and anti-submarine warfare while operating two embarked helicopters. The FY2027 acquisition report also identifies a 30-knot speed requirement and a 4,000-nautical-mile endurance threshold for Flight III.

As of April 21, 2026, 76 Arleigh Burke-class destroyers had been delivered to the U.S. Navy, with 12 additional ships under construction and 24 under contract at Huntington Ingalls Industries' Ingalls Shipbuilding and General Dynamics Bath Iron Works. The current acquisition program covers 109 destroyers, with planned deliveries extending through DDG 150 in August 2040, making the Arleigh Burke Flight III a major component of long-term U.S. Navy surface warfare and integrated air and missile defense capability.

Design
The ships have steel superstructures and the first comprehensive CBR protection system in a U.S. Navy ship. More than 130 tons of Kevlar or plastic armor are used for vital spaces, including 70 tons around the combat control spaces. In a weight-saving program, DDG 78 and later employed about 50 tons less structural steel than earlier ships. The hull form is unusually broad in relation to length; fin stabilizers are not fitted, but they do have rudder roll-rate reduction. Prairie/Masker air bubbler systems are fitted to the hulls and propellers to reduce machinery noise radiation below the waterline.
