Russia about to provide Egypt with President-S airborne defense systems

Russia will provide Egypt with President-S airborne defensive aids suites (DAS) designed to protect aircraft from surface-to-air and air-launched missiles, Igor Nasenkov, first deputy director general, Radio Electronic Technologies (KRET, a Rostec subsidiary), told journalists on Friday, Dec. 25, 2015.

"We have been awarded an order that we are executing now. The delivery will start any time soon," he said.

The President-S protecting its carrier from air defense missiles carrying various types of seekers already equips the Ilyushin Il-76 (NATO reporting name: Candid) airlifter, Kamov Ka-52 (Hokum-B) attack/scout helicopter and Mil Mi-28 (Havoc) attack helicopter.

The DAS is designed for protection against not only air defense missiles, but air-launched missiles and antiaircraft guns as well. The President-S DAS comprises the control device, radar and laser warning receivers, missile attack warning receiver, radio-frequency and infrared decoys and flares, an active jammer, a non-coherent electro-optical jammer and a laser jammer. In addition to the above, airlifter and long-range bombers can be fitted out with a towed active radar decoy.

A multifunction indicator and its confirmation device may optionally be mounted on the individual types of aircraft.

Structurally, the equipment of the President-S is made in blocks (stations) that can be stored inside the fuselage of the plane (helicopters) and on external sites.

The President-S gives the commands for counter resource control and the exchange of information with the onboard systems of the helicopter (plane) according to GOST 18977-79 and RTM 1495-75, including GOST V 26 765.52-86 (MIL STD 1553 B).
