Russia and India revive talks on FGFA joint development project

Russia is currently in talks with India on delivering fifth-generation T-50 PAKFA (Prospective Airborne Complex of Frontline Aviation) fighter jets, the Times of India reported on Thursday. "Russia has offered India to deliver fifth-generation T-50 fighter jets," the newspaper’s military source said.

A senior team from Russia is currently in the capital for joint development talks on the Prospective Multirole Fighter (PMF) with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and commercial aspects of the deal are being worked out. India, which has already invested over $ 290 million in the fifth generation fighter program with Russia's Sukhoi Design Bureau had earlier wavered between continuing with the joint development project or buying a few of the fighters off the shelf, according to the Indian newspaper Economic Times.

"India will have to invest $3.7 billion in the project. The deal will envisage the technology transfer and the delivery of three prototype PAKFA fighter jets," the source said.

Russia and India are also in talks on developing and producing the fifth-generation fighter aircraft (FGFA) jointly.
A contract is expected to be signed to start R&D works. India has already allocated almost 15 billion rupees (about $250 million) for its preliminary design.

The source did not specify how the two projects would overlap.

Earlier, a TASS source close to the Indian Defense Ministry said that "the development of the fifth-generation fighter aircraft may be preceded by the delivery of assembled PAKFA fighter jets."
