"The hypersonic flying laboratory GLL-AP is designed to create an experimental base for flight tests of the demonstrational high-speed steady-flow ram jet integrated with experimental hypersonic craft (EGA)," the daily quoted institute Director General Pavel Vlasov as saying.
The demonstrator of the hypersonic air-breather engine is created by experts of the Baranov Central Air Engine-Building Institute. The designers say the demonstrator engine will ensure cruising-speed flight in a range of 5 to 7M. The experimental hypersonic craft with air-breather engine is designed by the Gromov Institute and TsAGI. The Il-76MD aircraft with onboard number 76454 which underwent capital maintenance in 2015 at the 123rd Aircraft Repairs Plant in Staraya Russa in Novgorod region will be developed into the flying laboratory. In 2002 the aircraft together with other Il76 command and tracking stations was handed over to the Gromov Institute by the Russian Air Force. In early 2007 the aircraft was developed into a flying laboratory for flight tests of the Russian-French SaM146 jet engine intended for Sukhoi Superjet-100 aircraft. The tests of the engine were completed in the first half of 2010. Zhukovskie vesti said the Il-76MD will have one left engine D-30KP dismantled and replaced by a special suspension for the experimental hypersonic flying craft. During test trials the craft will separate from Il-76 for an independent flight. The Gromov Institute is engaged in hypersonic research in the framework of the government-approved Federal goal-oriented program supervised by several ministries, including the Russian defense ministry. Unofficial reports said appropriations for the federal program as well as other important defense plans have been several times cut, Zhukovskie vesti said. |
