Dubai Airshow 2017: UAE, Russia continue talks on Su-35 fighter jets delivery

Russia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) continue talks on the delivery of Sukhoi Su-35 fighter jets, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said at the Dubai Airshow 2017. "The talks are in progress," Rogozin said in reply to a question about the delivery of Su-35 planes to the United Arab Emirates.

It was reported earlier that the United Arab Emirates intended to purchase more than a squadron of Su-35 fighter jets from Russia. The exact number of Su-35 planes to be delivered to the United Arab Emirates was planned to be discussed at talks during the Dubai Airshow 2017. A fighter air squadron in the Russian Air Force comprises 12 aircraft but their exact number depends on the type of a regiment.

A TASS source said at that time that the contract might be signed before the yearend if the talks were successful.

UAE and Russia signed a letter of intent on the purchase of Su-35 fighter jets in Feb. 2017, at the last edition of IDEX defense & security exhibition, in Feb. 2017.

In April, the Russian Industry and Trade Minister Denis Manturov confirmed that "Talks on the issue are currently under way. It is clear that the talks on the delivery of several dozen planes take time," Manturov said.

The Su-35 is a radically modernized version of the Su-27 aircraft to significantly enhance its combat effectiveness against aerial, ground and sea tagets. The important difference of the Su-35 over the Su-27 is the use of new high-power engines in the propulsion system. They were designed at NPO Saturn, a part of UEC, and are known as "117S".

Despite the lack of the APAA, the Su-35 radar system can detect targets at ranges of up to 400 km. These capabilities are provided by a new fighter radar control system with the phased array antenna Irbis, which is produced by the Ryazan State Instrument Enterprise, which is a part of KRET.
