Qatar agrees to buy 24 Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets
 
The British Defence Secretary Michael Fallon and its Qatari counterpart, Dr. Khalid bin Mohammed Al-Atttiyah, today signed a letter of intent (LOI) that will see the planemaker BAE Systems provide 24 Eurofighter Typhoon jets and support capabilities worth billions of dollars.

The two defense ministers "signed an LOI this morning at the Ministry of Defense that in addition to solidifying the continued cooperation and commitment between the two nations in military and technicals fields, also lays the groundwork for Qatar's intentions towards procuring 24 advanced Eurofighter Typhoon's and supporting capabilities", the the Qatari Ministry of Defense said in an official statement.

"The LOI will further advance the State of Qatar's capacity to its ongoing efforts in combating terrorism and violent extremism in the region", the statement added.

The Qatar Air Force started evaluating the Typhoon, alongside the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, the McDonnell Douglas F-15E Strike Eagle, the Dassault Rafale, and the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II, in January 2011 to replace its ageing fleet of Dassault Mirage 2000-5s.

The Typhoon has already been selected by sereval Middle-Eastern countries: Saudi Arabia (72), Kuwait (28) and Oman (12).
