"A decision has been made to organize the serial production of the Il-276 medium transport plane at the Aviastar-SP Company. A task was assigned to spend budget funds as effectively as possible and make manufacturing lines currently being set up for the new plane compatible with the Il-76 and Il-78 aircraft," Rogozin said at a meeting.

"Basic technical requirements have been outlined and we are planning to approve the requirements specification for the new plane before the yearend," he added.

"Active work is currently under way at the Aviastar-SP Company to reconstruct its manufacturing facilities and we are preparing for the serial production of the Il-76MD-90A plane that is undergoing trials. We believe that the plane will be in demand both in the Russian Armed Forces and abroad. However, the Russian Defense Ministry is the key customer for us. We are developing close cooperation with it and a new state armament program is being drafted," Rogozin said.

At the end of the meeting, a number of decisions were made. In particular, the participants in the meeting decided to take measures aimed at repairing and upgrading the fleet of military transport planes, ensuring their timely production and delivery to the Russian Armed Forces in accordance with state defense contracts, increasing the amount of funds allocated for military transport aircraft repair and maintenance and amending laws on state defense order fulfillment.

Formerly called Il-214, the IL-276 is a twin-engine jet with a take-off weight of just over 60 tonnes. Its payload is about 20 tonnes. The aircraft is to be capable of flying over 6,000 kilometers at a speed of more than 800 kilometers per hour. At the same time, the IL-276 will have to do without runways, and will be able to take off and land on unprepared or semi-prepared terrain.>
