Russia's Far East Air Regiment receives new Mi-8AMTSh helicopters

An Eastern Military District army aviation regiment based in the Primorye Territory in Russia’s Far East has received six Mil Mi-8AMTSh and Mi-8AMTSh-V helicopters, the Russian Pacific Fleet’s press office said on January 10, 2018.

"An Eastern Military District army aviation regiment based in the Primorye Territory in Russia’s Far East has received five advanced Mi-8AMTSh transport/attack helicopters and one Mi-8AMTSh-V rotorcraft," the press office said.
"The crews flew from the Ulan-Ude Aircraft Plant to the airbase. The helicopters covered a total distance of more than 2,000 kilometers [1,243 miles]," the press office added. The Mi-8AMTSh transport/attack helicopter is an upgraded version of the Mi-8 (NATO reporting name: Hip) military transport rotorcraft. The Mi-8AMTSh helicopter is designed to eliminate the enemy’s military hardware, including armored vehicles, weapon emplacements and manpower. The Mi-8AMTSh helicopter’s ammunition load comprises both unguided and precision-guided weapons, in particular, the 9M120 Ataka (AT-9 Spiral-2) or 9M114 Shturm (AT-6 Spiral) antitank missiles. The helicopter is capable of carrying 37 paratroopers, 12 stretches with wounded personnel or 4 tons of cargo. The Mi-8AMTSh helicopter can also carry out search-and-rescue and evacuation operations. The helicopter is powered by two VK-2500 higher-power engines. The helicopter is equipped with a defensive suite. The cabin of the advanced helicopter has multifunction displays showing digital terrain maps and state-of-the-art navigation and flight equipment compatible with the GPS and GLONASS global positioning systems. The Mi-8AMTSh helicopter also features an extended service life, which allows spending far less on its maintenance during the term of its operation. Unlike the baseline version, the Mi-8AMTSh-V helicopter has new VK-2500-03 higher-power gas-turbine engines with an automatic control system, a higher-power auxiliary power plant, a reinforced transmission system and upgraded avionics. |
