The twin-tail rotorcraft has a maximum take-off weight of 3,600 t and can transport a payload of 1,000 kg, or six fully equipped servicemen, inside the cargo cabin or on a sling load. The rotorcraft provides a cruise speed of 220 km/h at sea level, a service ceiling of 5,700 m, and a maximum flight range with only main fuel tanks of 514 km.
At Aero India 2021, Deputy Director of the Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation (FSVTS) Vladimir Drozhzhov told the TASS news agency that a refined proposal for a firm contract would be reviewed soon.
India is set to receive 200 Ka-226Ts, of which 60 will be imported from Russia in fly-away condition and the 140 remaining will be produced by the Russian-Indian joint venture Indo-Russian Helicopters Limited.
The Ulan-Ude Aviation Plant (U-UAZ, a subsidiary of the Russian Helicopters) has completed the production of Ka-226T components for various trials. The prototype of the rotorcraft is set to make its maiden flight in the first half of the year.
The Ka-226T light utility rotorcraft has been developed by Rostec’s Russian Helicopters. It features a coaxial main rotor with no tail rotors; this scheme dramatically increases flight safety and allows an operator to fly the helicopter from relatively small vessels and landing pads in the mountains. According to the Russian Helicopters, the rotorcraft is designed for operations in high mountains, under hot climatic conditions, and over sea surfaces and for reconnaissance, patrol, monitoring, and transport missions.
