“The first launch of an extended-range version of the BrahMos missile from the Su-30MKI fighter was conducted. The launch was as planned and the missile hit the assigned target in the Bay of Bengal,” the press office said.
As the press office specified, the Indian air force has achieved the capability to carry out precision strikes from Su-30MKI against a land or sea target over very long ranges. “The extended range capability of the missile, coupled with the high performance of the Su-30MKI aircraft, gives the Indian air force ‘strategic reach’ and allows it to ‘dominate the future battlefields’, the press office added.
The BrahMos is a supersonic cruise missile produced by the Russian-Indian joint venture BrahMos Aerospace. It was designed by the Russian NPO Mashinostroeniya Enterprise (a subsidiary of the Tactical Missiles Corporation (KTRV)) and the Indian Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO). The first test launch took place in 2001. The Indian Air Force, Navy and Ground Forces are armed with various versions of the BrahMos missile.
