L3Harris delivers Wescam MX-25D EO/IR imaging system to USSOCOM for AC-130J Ghostrider gunship.
L3Harris Technologies has handed over a Wescam MX-25D electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) and laser designator sensor system to the US Special Operations Command (USSOCOM). As reported by AirForce Technology, delivery of the imaging system is part of the modernization strategy implemented by the US Air Force Special Operations Command (USAFSOC) for its Lockheed Martin AC-130J Ghostrider gunships. The latest development also marks a key milestone, as the company completes the delivery of its 6,000th Wescam MX-Series imaging system to USSOCOM.

L3Harris’ Wescam MX-25D EO/IR targeting and designating system is ideal for ultra-high, long-endurance surveillance and reconnaissance missions from manned and unmanned airborne platforms. The Wescam MX-Series systems are currently in use with over 80 countries, providing advanced targeting and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities for different multi-domain platforms. This system can be equipped with multiple fixed-wing, aerostat and uncrewed aerial vehicles.
L3Harris’ designating system enables teams to dominate the battlefield 24/7, with greater precision than ever before. Field-proven, with extensive deployment, their Wescam MX-Series designating systems offer “plug-and-play” installation, and high-sensitivity multi-spectral sensors for day, low-light and night-time missions. High mean-time-between-failures are achieved through a diode-pumped laser target designator, and systems offer precise geo-pointing technologies for hands-free simplicity regardless of aircraft movement or obstructions. The capability is here.
Quoted by AirForce Technology, L3Harris Electro Optical president Kristin Houston said: “L3Harris Wescam MX-Series products have successfully supported USSOCOM and AFSOC aviation programs for more than 20 years, specifically the AC-130 H, U, W, and J model gunships. We’re truly honored that the 6,000th unit milestone was reached with our delivery to the USSOCOM and AFSOC AC-130J gunship Block 30 upgrade program.”
Installation of this EO/IR system onto the AC-130J Ghostrider aircraft fleet is part of the US AFSOC’s AC-130J gunship Block 30 upgrade program. The upgrade primarily involves updating the precision strike package of the aircraft fleet which includes two EO/IR sensor systems, a communications suite, advanced fire control equipment, a mission management console and precision-guided munitions. The first AC-130J upgraded aircraft under this program was delivered to AFSOC in 2019.
