These helicopters, known for their robustness and versatility, are specifically designed for various missions, ranging from troop transport to medical evacuation, as well as search and rescue operations. Their ability to adapt to difficult conditions and their proven reliability make them valuable assets for the Somali armed forces, which are engaged in the fight against the insurgent group Al Shabaab.

The delivery of these aircraft comes at a time when the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) has begun the gradual withdrawal of its troops, in accordance with UN Security Council Resolutions 2628 and 2670. This withdrawal, which involves the evacuation of 2,000 soldiers by the end of June and another 3,000 by September, aims to progressively transfer security responsibilities to Somali forces.

The Bell 412EPX, the latest version of the renowned Bell helicopter series, represents excellence in modern aviation, combining performance, reliability, and safety for commercial and military operations. Equipped with a reinforced main rotor capable of operating even in the event of lubrication failure, this helicopter offers increased load capacity, with a maximum internal weight of 12,200 pounds and an external weight of 13,000 pounds. These features allow operators to transport more material, thereby increasing operational efficiency.

Powered by electronically controlled Pratt & Whitney PT6T-9 Twin Pac® engines, the Bell 412EPX benefits from a 15% increase in takeoff power, particularly valuable on hot days. These engines, equipped with automatic start functions and temperature limiting, also enhance the aircraft's performance in challenging flight conditions.

By equipping Somalia with these advanced helicopters, Italy significantly contributes to strengthening the Somali government's response capabilities in the face of internal security challenges. This initiative is seen as a key step in consolidating national security at a time when Somalia is increasingly taking on responsibilities in the fight against threats within its territory.

This transfer also reflects the ongoing collaboration between Somalia and its international partners, aiming to stabilize the region and ensure a safer future for the Somali population.
