The missiles were fired from South Hwanghae Province, reported the South Korean news agency Yonhap, citing authorities in Seoul. One of the missiles traveled about 600 kilometers, while the second traveled about 120 kilometers.
During a press conference, the South Korean military declared that it will maintain its capability and posture to respond robustly to any provocation while closely monitoring various activities of North Korea within a strong joint defense posture with the United States.
The official news agency of Pyongyang, KCNA, mentioned a successful test of a "new important technology."
However, a spokesperson for the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff told reporters that one of the test missiles exploded early in flight. Seoul is still analyzing the launch and has not immediately confirmed if there were any casualties or material damage in North Korea, the spokesperson indicated.
North Korea condemns the "Asian NATO"
This launch comes less than a day after North Korea criticized a joint military exercise held this month by South Korea, Japan, and the United States, calling the alliance an "Asian version of NATO."
North Korea "will firmly defend the sovereignty, security, and state interests as well as peace in the region through offensive and overwhelming countermeasures," stated a communiqué released by Pyongyang's official news agency, KCNA.
Under the rule of its supreme leader, Kim Jong Un, North Korea has developed nuclear-capable missiles in recent years, despite international sanctions against Pyongyang due to its nuclear and missile programs.
South Korean officials have previously stated that the recent launches of short-range ballistic missiles by North Korea could be aimed at showcasing its products to potential buyers.
North Korea is suspected of supplying ballistic missiles and artillery shells to Russia, a claim that both countries deny despite their commitments to military cooperation and a mutual military support pact.
