Norwegian Defense Minister Bjørn Arild Gram emphasized the strategic importance of the Black Sea and maritime domains for Ukraine, noting that quickly developing the Ukrainian Coast Guard is a priority for the coalition. The spare parts will support the operation and maintenance of Sea King helicopters previously donated to Ukraine by Germany.

The Sea King helicopter, officially known as the Sikorsky SH-3 Sea King, was developed by Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation as a twin-engine anti-submarine warfare helicopter, first entering service in 1961. It was primarily used by the United States Navy for utility roles in naval operations, including submarine detection and attack, as well as search and rescue missions.

Produced from the early 1960s until 1987, over 1,400 units were built and exported worldwide, including to the United Kingdom, Italy, and Norway, where they were used in various roles from anti-submarine warfare to VIP transport.

The Sea King is known for its spacious hull, amphibious capabilities, and ability to land on water, making it highly versatile. It is equipped with a five-blade main rotor and a tail rotor, contributing to its distinctive profile. Designed to carry a variety of payloads, including torpedoes and sonar buoys, it was typically outfitted with advanced sensors and systems for its diverse roles, helping to extend its service life with various upgrades and modifications across different national fleets well into the 21st century.

Germany has committed to donating six Sea King helicopters to Ukraine, while the United Kingdom plans to donate three. Norway’s contribution of spare parts will specifically support the maintenance of the helicopters provided by Germany, ensuring they remain operational and effective in Ukraine’s efforts to secure its maritime borders.

Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide highlighted the broader strategic significance of the Black Sea for Ukraine, particularly in terms of the country's ability to export goods. He expressed satisfaction that spare parts from Norway's decommissioned Sea Kings could aid Ukraine in establishing and enhancing its Coast Guard capabilities, crucial for the nation's security and economic stability.

This collaboration reflects a joint effort by Norway, Germany, and the United Kingdom to provide practical support to Ukraine's maritime defense, underscoring the importance of international cooperation in addressing security challenges amid the ongoing conflict with Russia.
