According to a statement published by the United States Department of Defense on August 19, 2022, a new military aid for Ukraine was announced with the delivery of 16 105mm Howitzers and 36,000 105mm artillery rounds. The 105mm howitzer model had not been specified, but with this video, we can confirm that the Ukrainian army will receive the latest variant of the M119.
The M119 howitzer is the American designation for the British L119 light gun which is in service with the U.S. Army. In 1987 an agreement was reached to produce the L119 under license by the US as the M119, to replace the M102 howitzer. It entered service with the 7th Infantry Division, Fort Ord, California, in December 1989.
The M119A3 is the latest variant in the family of M119. The M119A3 features new software and hardware component upgrades, GPS for navigation, a digital gunner's display, and digital communication between each gun and the fire direction center to speed up the process of receiving firing data and firing shells. The towed gun is also upgraded with fixed recoil and Suspension Lock Out System (SLOS) to fire top charge at all angles.
The M119A3 is a 105mm light towed howitzer which has a weight of 2,130 kg and can be towed by HMMWV, 2.5 ton, and 5-ton trucks.
The M119A3 has a maximum firing range of 19.5 km with rocket-assisted munitions and 14 km using unassisted ammunition. It has a rate of fire of six rounds per minute.
