GDELS Piranha 5 redefines battlefield communication for German Army as part of TaWAN project.
General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS) has secured a pivotal contract with the German Army to bolster the Bundeswehr’s modernization efforts. Under the TaWAN project—a comprehensive program aimed at establishing a vehicle-based, long-range telecommunications network—GDELS is set to deliver an initial batch of 58 state-of-the-art Piranha 5 vehicles, with options to expand the order to a total of 256 units. The contract, valued in the three-digit million range, underscores the strategic importance of advanced mobile communication platforms in modern military operations.

The Piranha 5 is engineered to provide an agile, armored connectivity solution, featuring a sophisticated 15-meter telescopic mast system. This innovative setup transforms the vehicle into a mobile command post, capable of establishing and maintaining robust long-range communications on the battlefield. The design builds on proven success, drawing on operational experience from the Piranha 3 KOMPAK variant, which has long served the Swiss Army with distinction.
GDELS’ commitment to the project is reinforced through its partnership with Rheinmetall, the prime contractor responsible for overseeing the entire TaWAN initiative. This collaboration represents a concerted effort by Germany’s leading defense companies to integrate cutting-edge technology into the Bundeswehr’s operational framework, ensuring that the nation’s armed forces remain at the forefront of modern military capabilities.
In addition to vehicle production, GDELS is set to establish a system support center in Neubrandenburg. This center will be critical in providing immediate technical and logistical support, ensuring that the fleet remains fully operational and ready for deployment as modern warfare demands swift and coordinated responses.
Dr. Thomas Kauffmann, GDELS Vice President and Managing Director GDELS-Deutschland, remarked, “We are very grateful and proud about the trust the Bundeswehr and our industrial partner has bestowed upon GDELS. We will deliver first PIRANHA 5 series vehicles already next year and establish manufacturing and sustainment capabilities in Germany.”
Antonio Bueno, President of GDELS, added, “The undertaken effort is demonstrating GDELS’ strong commitment as a reliable partner for the Bundeswehr and Germany. We look forward to this opportunity and to reinforcing our dedication to this important home market.”
The deployment of the PIRANHA 5 is anticipated to significantly enhance the German Army’s operational connectivity, ensuring that critical communication lines remain secure and resilient in diverse combat scenarios. As the Bundeswehr continues its broad modernization program, the integration of advanced mobile platforms like the PIRANHA 5 will be instrumental in maintaining tactical superiority and operational flexibility in today’s dynamic security environment.
This landmark contract not only reinforces Germany’s commitment to upgrading its defense capabilities but also highlights the importance of strategic partnerships and technological innovation in safeguarding national security.
