Indian Army Strengthens Its Air Defense with Next-Generation Missile Systems.
The Indian Army is set to integrate three cutting-edge missile systems. These advanced technologies, designed to intercept and effectively neutralize various aerial threats – including enemy missiles and rockets – play a crucial role in the nation's overall defense strategy. This initiative reflects a commitment to modernizing the military arsenal, ensuring a rapid and appropriate response to current challenges while bolstering national sovereignty and territorial security.

The Indian Army is preparing to integrate three state-of-the-art missile systems engineered to counter a range of aerial threats, including enemy missiles and rockets.
Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QRSAM) has recently completed its testing phase with success. With an effective range of 30 km, this advanced system is specifically designed to protect infantry and armored units on the battlefield. The Army is expediting its procurement process and plans to finalize the acquisition contract within the next four months.
To address the need for robust close-range protection, the Army is evaluating a Very Short-Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) available in two variants. The indigenous version, developed by DRDO, recently conducted three successful test flights off the coast of Odisha, successfully intercepting high-speed, low-altitude targets. The Ministry of Defence confirmed that “in all three test flights, the missiles intercepted and completely destroyed the targets.” Additionally, an imported alternative is being considered for rapid operational deployment. An emergency purchase is planned while DRDO refines its system, and a Request for Information (RFI) will soon be issued to encourage the participation of Indian manufacturers.
Expanding its defense capabilities even further, the Army has begun to integrate the Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM), a system offering a range of 70 km. Derived from a similar platform deployed on Navy warships, the MRSAM developed for the Army has been co-developed by DRDO and Israel Aerospace Industries. Equipped with a multifunction radar and a mobile launcher system, this system is designed to neutralize threats at greater distances. A test firing is scheduled for next summer, while the first unit is already operational in the eastern sector.
These developments underscore India’s commitment to modernizing its air defense network and enhancing battlefield resilience. By combining indigenous innovations with strategic international partnerships, the Indian Army is positioning itself to effectively counter evolving aerial threats while consolidating its technological autonomy in the field of defense.
