Türkiye has officially integrated the SİPER Block-1 air defense system into its national arsenal, marking significant progress in technological self-reliance. Developed by Roketsan, Aselsan, and TÜBİTAK SAGE, the SİPER system protects against complex aerial threats, including cruise missiles and drones. During tests in 2023, it demonstrated the ability to intercept targets over 100 kilometers away. Future versions, with ranges of up to 180 kilometers, are already under development. Erdogan also announced the launch of the Steel Dome project and accelerated plans for long-range ballistic missiles capable of reaching 2,000 kilometers.
In the naval domain, the MILGEM program stands out for its domestically designed corvettes and frigates. While five ships are already operational, seven additional frigates are under construction. Other significant naval projects include the TF-2000 air defense destroyer, a national submarine being built in Gölcük, and the MUGEM aircraft carrier, which aims to bolster Türkiye’s naval presence in the region. These initiatives not only enhance military capacity but also demonstrate the advancing expertise of Türkiye’s defense industry.
These developments align with Türkiye’s goal of becoming a key player in the global arms market. In 2022, the country achieved $4.4 billion in defense exports, with a target of $6 billion for 2023. They also support Türkiye's regional influence, particularly in Syria, where it has taken an active role in addressing security threats. Tensions with Israel, oscillating between confrontations and rapprochements, highlight the challenges and complexity of Türkiye’s regional strategy, balancing military initiatives with shifting political dynamics.
In summary, these efforts reflect a coherent strategic vision. Türkiye is establishing itself as a significant regional power while strengthening its military sovereignty and positioning in the global defense market. This technological and military expansion underscores its aim to project influence and adapt to evolving geopolitical realities.
