Security forces have killed 11 militants in two separate operations in the North Caucascus Republic of Dagestan. An interior ministry spokesman said officers shot eight extremists dead on Monday in the capital of Makhachkala after they had refused to surrender. Shootings and bomb attacks have been increasing in Dagestan, where militants want to establish an Islamic republic. On Sunday evening officers killed another three insurgents after clashes broke out in the village of Komsomolskoye. Earlier that day a federal anti-terrorist official was shot dead in his car as he drove to work.
