Estonia is buying over 80 SISU XA-188 armored carriers, currently owned by the Dutch defense forces, for close to 20 million euros. The Estonian defense forces want to use the vehicles to continue mechanizing the 1st Infantry Brigade and to offer their units in Afghanistan a better level of armored protection. "Compared with the current armored carriers these ones offer better protection, and the first carriers should reach Afghanistan this year for the use by the Estonian troops stationed there," said Minister of Defense Jaak Aaviksoo. The Ministry of Defense is currently in preliminary negotiations with the Netherlands on unit prices, delivery terms and payment schedule. The delivery will be made starting this year through 2015. Estonia previously purchased 60 SISU XA-180EST armored carriers from Finland in 2004, costing four million euros. The SISU XA-188 is similar to the latest vehicles, which will make use, maintenance and repair of the Dutch vehicles easier. The ministry said the new vehicles have better protection against live fire, IEDs and mines. Also to be procured from the Netherlands are medical and control point armored vehicles. These vehicles, 80 in number, will be used to deliver supplies to the 1st Infantry Brigade.Estonia is buying over 80 SISU XA-188 armored carriers, currently owned by the Dutch defense forces, for close to 20 million euros.
