The Iraqi Army has accepted an initial supply of 11 US-built tanks in advance of the withdrawal of US forces from Iraq in coming months. The 11 M1A1 Abrams Main Battle Tanks (MBTs) represent the first wave of a much larger delivery which will eventually see the Iraqi Army equipped with 140 examples. The last of these will be delivered by the end of 2011, the point at which US troops will start vacating Iraq as per the terms of a security agreement established between Washington and Baghdad in 2008. The Abrams M1A1 Iraqi tanks news was announced by a spokesman for the Iraqi defence ministry. “Today, Iraq received 11 US-made tanks as part of an agreement with the US to hand over 140 tanks to the Iraqi army”, Major General Mohammed al-Askari advised news agency AFP. He continued: “This step is part of preparations by Iraqi forces to take over security responsibilities and build a strong army as the US withdraws. This delivery will help to form the military's first armoured division since 2003.” Several days earlier, the US Army issued its own statement to the media, describing how the Iraqi M1A1 Abrams would be based at Besmaya Range Complex: a training facility close to Baghdad, control of which was only recently given back to Iraqi forces. The Iraqi Army has accepted an initial supply of 11 US-built tanks in advance of the withdrawal of US forces from Iraq in coming months.
