explosive device in Afghanistan. |

A
New Zealand LAV light armoured vehicle has been hit by an
improvised explosive device in Afghanistan's Bamyan Province.
The unit was hit around 12.30pm New Zealand time, with no
injuries reported yet.

just last month to increase the protection of soldiers against
IED threats. |

New Zealand
Army LAVs were sent to Afghanistan just last month, to
provide the reconstruction team with extra protection
following the death of Lieutenant Timothy O'Donnell last
year, when his convoy were attacked by insurgents.
The vehicle suffered some damage but can be recovered.
Commander Joint Forces, Major General Dave Gawn says the
incident highlights the value in deploying the LAV to
Afghanistan as its upgraded armour protected its crew
from injury.
