At
GDA 2011, Serbia presents a full range of military products, including
the wheeled self-propelled howitzer Nora and the multi-role combat vehicle
Lazar
designed, manufactured and marketed by the country. Before it fell apart
in the wars of the 1990s, the former Yugoslavia was a big arms exporter.
NATO damaged many of Serbia’s weapon factories in 1999 during the Kosovo war. But the industry has started to recover. In 2008 Serbian military exports were worth $200m. Last year they brought in twice that sum (not including a $400m contract, signed in November, to build three arms factories in Algeria). Yugoimport-SDPR, the trading arm for six of Serbia’s main producers, says sales have been growing by 30% a year since 2002. Defence accounts for 4% of Serbian exports and 10,000 jobs. |

Early
2009, the Serbian defense Company Yugoimport had completed the prototype
of a new Multi-Role Armoured Combat Vehicle (MRACV) called LAZAR. The
LAZAR 8x8 is a multi-purpose armored vehicle designed
following modern world trends in the development of a family of wheeled
armoured vehicles intended for carrying out of a number of tactical tasks
in different armed conflicts. The LAZAR can be equipped with a full range of weapon station armed with machine gun or 30 mm cannon. The turret/weapon station/gun-mount weighs between 400kg and 2t. Its diameter ranges between 640mm and 1600mm based on the allied armament. The V-shaped armoured body can withstand the explosions of antitank mines and improvised explosive devices beneath the vehicle wheels and vehicle floor. |
