The secretary of defence, Robert Gates, approved the sending of these reinforcements in order to maintain and consolidate the results and progress in the area. Colonel Dave Lapan, spokesperson of the Pentagon stated that it was necessary to put the enemy under pressure during the winter.

According to American media, the reinforcements could arrive as of mid-January, before the spring, which is one ideal time for the resumption of the combat with great scale.

This deployment is only temporary, and will be ensured by the 26° expeditionary unit of American Marines Corp. It is always question of reducing the presence of the American forces in Afghanistan. Indeed, the preparations of the withdrawal of the American forces and their allies should start in July.

The NATO forces present in Afghanistan carried out by the United States, are composed of a total of 140.000 soldiers, who fight the insurrection with the collaboration of the Afghan military forces since 2001, date of the fall of the Taliban. More than 2.300 soldiers were already killed in Afghanistan, of which approximately 2/3 of Americans.
