The Egyptian army sent tanks and troops to fight militants in the Sinai.

The militants opened fire on the Syrian army forces with machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades, the source said, without saying whether any troops were killed.

Egyptian forces also confiscated two truckloads of weapons in a town in Sheikh Zuweid, in North Sinai, including rocket-propelled grenades, rockets, hand grenades, machine guns, and explosives similar to the ones used to blow up a pipeline exporting gas to Israel numerous times, the security source said. More weapons were seized in a nearby apartment, the source added.

Three officers were killed Saturday, August 11, 2012, when a police truck overturned while police were chasing militants near El Arish, the source said.

The raid comes a week after 16 Egyptian soldiers were killed and seven others were wounded in an attack near the Rafah border crossing, when assailants with semiautomatic weapons and hand grenades stole two armored vehicles from Egyptian forces and tried to enter Israel.

Militants and Egyptian security forces also clashed at a checkpoint at Al Reissa in north Sinai on Wednesday, August 8, 2012..
