IVECO Defence Vehicles presents two versions of its MPV Medium Protected Vehicle at Eurosatory.
At Eurosatory, the Italian Company IVECO Defence Vehicles presents two versions of the MPV (Medium Protected Vehicle) 4x4, the MPV Baseline platform and MPV Ambulance/Intensive Treatment Unit. The MPV design is based on the Iveco Trakker military off the shelf truck chassis, already in service with a number of European Armies, including the UK, Germany and Switzerland, combined with a protected crew cell.

The MPV is a highly mobile and agile vehicle which is capable of operating across a wide range of terrain. It is well adapted to operations in demanding climatic environments. Besides its excellent tactical mobility, MPV also possesses outstanding tactical and strategic mobility. It is air transportable in C130 as well as in A400M.

This cell incorporates the driver’s cab and mission area, offering more than 13m3 volume in the standard 4x4 version, increasing to 16 m3 for the ambulance/Intensive treatment unit variant. The maximum combat weight of up to 18 tonnes and a chassis capable of mastering the toughest of terrains gives MPV 4x4 excellent tactical mobility in all missions.

The base steel armour of the crew cell, developed in conjunction with KMW, provides a high level of ballistic protection and this can be further enhanced through the use of appliqué protection to meet the predicted threat: the transparent armour is designed to match the protection provided by the rest of the vehicle.

The design of the vehicle is key to the effectiveness of the protection system. Performance against both mine and IED blast is greatly improved both by the hull shape and by the hull’s inherently larges stand-off. Additional design features then further reduce the blast effect such as underbody deflection plates and a blast energy management system. Large tyres fitted with run-flat inserts optimize absorption of blast energy, particularly for under-wheel blasts, and wheel arches are lined with deflector plates.

In addition to benefiting from all above listed features of the standard MPV 4x4 platform, the MPV Ambulance/Intensive Treatment Unit offers increased space and improved ergonomics over the standard MPV 4x4 platform, optimizing the casualty treatment area. The vehicle is equipped with two stretchers, which can be loaded using an onboard system, and will carry a crew of 4: driver, commander, medical officer and nurse.

The vehicle will be equipped with an NBC protection system and will provide a safe space in which lifesaving treatment can be undertaken, even close to the front line. The additional headroom enables the doctor or nurse to stand, greatly facilitating effective treatment. The stretcher loading system, which has been patented by Iveco allows stretchers to be loaded automatically at a height of 1200 mm from the ground.

The Italian Army has already ordered Ambulance and Route Clearance versions (designated VTMM Ambulance by the Italian Army).
