A meeting of the Council of Ministers held at Singh Durbar, the administrative building of Nepal, took the decision to this effect, according to government spokesperson and Minister for Foreign Affairs Madhav Prasad Ghimire. "We had received a request from the UN to send peace troops to Syria. We gave a node to the proposal in today's meeting," Ghimire said, while talking with journalists. As per the UN-Nepal understanding, the first batch of Nepali Army personnel, 130 in total, will be deployed in July to be joined again by 130 Nepali peace troops in September. Nepali troops will be a part of the UN Supervision Mission in Syria (UNSMIS). The Mission was set up in 2012 in line with the UN Security Council Resolution No. 2043. Nepal is a key peace troops contributing nation of the UN. As of today, more than 100,000 Nepali troops have already worked in the UN's international peace missions since 1950s. |
