Sultanate of Oman to buy the air defense missile system THAAD from United States. | |||
The
Governments of the Sultanate of Oman and the United States of America
are pleased to announce a deal for the acquisition of a U.S. manufactured
ground based air defense system THAAD.
The Persian Gulf sultanate of Oman is set to buy a $2.1 billion missile
system built by the U.S. Raytheon Co. as part of a U.S. drive to install
a coordinated air-defense system linking the region's Arab monarchies
to counter Iran. |

This system, which has been selected by the Sultanate of Oman following a thorough evaluation and assessment process, offers high levels of effectiveness, capable of meeting the operational requirements of the Royal Air Force of Oman and providing seamless air protection by virtue of its cutting edge air defense technology. In the meantime,
final negotiations on the procurement of the system are in progress
with U.S. defense manufacturer Raytheon Company and a final conclusion
of the deal is expected following agreements on the technical aspects
of the system, through life support and maintenance and other related
matters. The Terminal
High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) System is the upper
tier of the Army's two-tier Theater Missile Defense Concept. The wide-area,
higher-altitude protection of the THAAD System interfaces with the lower-tier
Patriot System. |
