Venezuela takes delivery of the first Russian-made BUK-M2E air defence missile system.
Venezuela takes delivery of the first Russian-made ground-to-air air defence missile system BUK-M2E, according to a picture published by the Venezuelan newspaper El Diario showing trucks carrying Russian-made 9M317 missiles on a road in Venezuela, which is used by the Buk-M2E (NATO code SA-17 Grizzly).

In 2009, Russia has agreed to lend Venezuela over $2 billion to finance the purchase of weapons including tanks and advanced anti-aircraft missiles. Venezuela had also bought over $4 billion of weapons from Russia including 24 Sukhoi fighter jets.

Venezuela also acquired Russian-made Antey 2500 (S-300VM) in September 2009 , to be operated by the Aerospace Defense Command Structure (CODAI), which is assigned to the Strategic Operational Command (CEO) of the National Armed Forces.

The Buk-M2E (NATO name SA-17 Grizzly) is a russian made mobile medium-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) system designed to defend field troops and logistical installations against air threats.

The SA-17 Gadfly uses the new 9M317 missile. The weight of the missile is 581 kg, including the 62 kg blast fragmentation warhead initiated by a dual-mode radar proximity fuze. Dimensions of the hull are 5.18 m length; 0.36 m maximum diameter. Range is 2.5 – 32 km in a 3S90M "Shtil-1" naval missile system. Altitude of targets from 15 m up to 15 km (and from 10 m to 10 km against other missiles). The 9M317 missiles can be fired at 2 second intervals, while its reaction (readiness) time is up to 10 s.
